gander mountain in minnetonka is closing and has some great deals on their stock. just a thought tho i would say yes to being fireproof and also bug one big enough to hold some of your other valuables like photo albums. pass ports and other vital info. and if you can bolt it down do so as well. ... paul

I have heard from more than a few that fireproof isn't worth the money. It's nice to have the extra bulk for security measures, but in a all out fire. There really is no such thing as "fireproof".

I don't know if that is true or not.

They are rated, for the amount of minutes, (minutes) in an all out fire, that it would take a fire department to get the fire down in temperature. I am no fire expert, but based on that, like dtro says, nothing is fireproof. As an addendum, nothing is theft proof either. If there is a will, there is a way. I have seen safes, big heavy, expensive ones stolen and accessed quite handily. I would think that bolting it to the floor would be a good idea. If I ever am fortunate enough to build a home, the house will be built around the safe, kinda like that one water faucet commercial.

There was a fourm on this topic a while back. As a firefighter I can very honestly tell you that no matter what safe your guns are in, if your house burns down your guns will be ruined.

It's your money but I would not drop huge coin just on a fire rating. If you are looking for anti theft and child protection those are different stories. The contents of the safe, however, will be destroyed if your home burns.

I have a Liberty safe that is fire rated for 45min at 1200 degrees. I don't know if that will hold up for that long at that temp., but that's what it is rated for. I'm really happy with the safe itself. Liberty is a good brand when it comes to safes. They obviously have different sizes, demensions and fire ratings to meet your needs. Look around and make sure to ask questions. There is definately a difference in quality.
