where to get smelt for pikebait?

where's the best bang for the buck for smelt? larger is better of course, but cost is a factor for me. anywhere between here and brainerd is fair game, thanks in advance for any recommendations.

I read a thread on here that someone used mackerel for deadbait as well? does that work as well? if so, any specific place better than another for purchasing some?

Up here in LOTW land our grocery stores sell nice big ones. Maybe scour your local supermarkets for some???

I just bought 2 bags at Cub West in St Cloud, they are the small ones but they are less than 4 bucks for 2 pounds. Cashwise in Waite Park has big ones but they sell out really fast and are currently out.

i know mike baits by hwy 8 in forest lake have frozen smelts they have 2 sizes small n large..
