setterguy
We just built a house about a year ago and our builder never asked us about what we wanted done with the ceiling. They installed a popcorn ceiling which is OK but I just like the look of a knockdown so much more. Is there any reasonable way to make the transformation. Would it just be a lot of scraping and refinishing?
Stratosman
Scraping and re-spraying....scraping is easy if it hasn't been painted over. Just use a putty knife and go to it. Another trick to help is to lightly spray with a hand spayer filled with water, this will soften the mud a bit, get lots of plastic!
Walleye Guy
Stratosman nailed it. If you spray small areas of the ceiling with a spray bottle filled with water you can relatively easily remove the popcorn with a drywall tool. This is assuming the ceiling hasn't been painted. With the drywall tool you can get the surface pretty clean and flat. Be careful around the taped joints. You don't want to dig into those when they are wet.
