Runners and Mat

Recommended Posts

Just installed a new 8.5' wide by 8' long 3/4" plywood bed with 2” X 4” X 8’ edge sides on my snowmobile trailer. Wondering about what to put on for snowmobile runners and mat? This trailer has three 2" X 8" X 6' ramps and will be used for ATV's, motorcycles, and snowmobiles. I have a 50'long by 8" wide strip of galvanized steel for runners and I was going to try cutting up some old hyfax for a mat. What have you used and or recommend? Sure would like to find an 8.5' by 10' Floe drive on-off trailer but for now my trailer will have to do. Come on snow and ice...this rain is killing me.

I have used 2 different materials but both are not easy to find. Polypropylene sheets cut to size and old conveyer belts. There are things you can buy for this application at most snowmobile or trailer stores but not cheap. At the very least put another layer of plywood where the skis run or you will tear up the base layer. If you run studs you need something to protect that as well. Same materials mentioned above or an old snowmobile track. Hope that helps.

I bought the HDPE (high density polyethylene) runners at fleet farm and installed them, they are 8" by 5'. A set of 4 pieces runs $40 and is enough for one sled; it was cheaper than shadetree or dennis kirk. I have dual carbides on my AC and these guides are compatible.

I figured that I could either try to jimmy-rig something that may or may not last, or spend $40 for something that should last for years.
