Strikemaster pull cord broke

stpauliguy

Question

Well heres the deal I replaced my old spark plug on my strikemaster 2000 auger and in the process of pulling the pull cord it uncoiled. the end of the rope is somewhat frayed so im guessing that the knot came out? but took out the 2 long screw in it and on nut on gas tank and cant figure out how to take off top to get to the flywheel underneath. How tough is it to recoil?? any ideas or someone ran into same thing? looking for answers. Thanks

Mine broke last year. It's not too hard to fix once you get the top off. On mine the plastic from the gas tank was covering one of the screws. I had to saw through it[not into the tank] to get the top off. It isn't very hard to recoil, although two sets of hands would be helpfull. My string is now about six inches too long, but I can live with that.

I would highly recommend NOT cutting the tank loop. You can remove the cover aftr a couple of steps. REMOVE ALL OF THE GAS. You can then remove the tank by popping off the hose at one end or the other. Then remove the air filter and cover exposing two nuts. Remove them, but DO NOT DROP THEM IN THE CARB. The tank should come off now with a little GENTLE movement, and the carb will be loose, but shouldn't come of. Remove or cut the "Strikemaster" sticker and the top should come off if all 3 screws are removed. For the recoil, I'd do a search for this very topic title in this forum, it has been discussed at length before. If you are not comfortable getting the cover off, the rest will be a HUGE pain in the arse, but learning something new will be good for you.

I highly recommend doing this repair yourself. It will take you a while the first couple times but really pays off in the long run. It is a great way to get to know your auger. I had mine go on the first day of a 3 day URL trip. The ONLY auger we had. mad.gif Never again. I can change it out in the portable now in about 15 minutes. A new preloaded spring is anywhere from $9-$12. I can't speak for anyone else, but I wasted quite a few hours trying to reload by hand(never succeded by the way)I keep everything I need to fix recoil or a rope break in a small tool box that goes right in the portable. The few small hand tools, a pre-loaded spring, some pull rope. When you get the the head cover off, take a marker and mark the inside of the case with the proper way for the spring to go in before you totally remove it.I picked up a tecumseh manual from Northern Tool and the rest of the instruction can be found with a little Googling. I took mine apart and put it back together a few times until I had it down. Good luck. You'll be happy you did it yourself when it goes out on you on a trip.
