Weekend pressure

I'd try to get out during the week but if not, then get as far off the beaten path as possible or find deeper water where the fish are less apt to spook. Most of my early ice fishing for eyes is in shallow water so I want to have the area relatively to myself to prevent the clanking, banging, loud talking, ice wrestling, football tossing, ice skating, 4 wheeler driving, hockey playing, dull ice chiselling, walking the dog, late arrving auger startin crowd from spooking the fish! grin.gif Get a good lake map and look for productive areas similar to those you have fished in the past. You may end up skunked a couple times when out prospecting but then again you may up hitting the mother lode and have them all to yourself cool.gif

I also try to stay away from all the snowmobilers.

Amen to that. Don't know what it is, but cars, and even augers don't bother fish all that much (though stomping around on the ice and dropping stuff does) but snowmobiles freak them out. A sled roaring by can put fish off for 20 minutes - not good at prime time. If I'm on a lake where there's a lot of sled traffic, I get as far off the beaten path as I can, even if that means fishing what would otherwise be a marginal spot.

Cheers,

Rob Kimm
