Strips-vs-chunks

Hey was wondering, I've mostley have bought my bait before fishing, suckers at scheels. This weekend I'm bait fishing, Goldeye then intended species. Have read alot of talk about cutting them into strips and chunks, Iis this personal preference? and why? Also Stu you have alot of water headed you're way. Later boar

BOAR - which scheels are you buying your bait at? The one down in Kato didn't have bait last time I was there, didnt know if there were like "ultra" scheels

Strips VS. Chunks - This is only my guess and opinion. I think its primarliy preference, But I think strips gives more surface area that emits scent over chunks. Current may also play a factor in how the strip lays in the current as well.

It depends on bait size for me. I prefer to chunk the 7-9 inch suckers. I like the mid-sections with the guts first, then the head. A lot of guys won't fish the heads, but I've caught plenty of cats on them. Try stepping on them to get the juices flowing a little more. For big suckers, I usually fillet the sides off & then chunk those into strips. It really doesn't matter too much, just keep it fresh & change the bait often. Vern

You know my preference Boar! Pinch em' in half, and try to leave some guts hangin' out behind. Always start with the tail piece, and use the heads only if your runnin' low on bait.

If your suckers are pretty big I'd "steak" em out - like we do the backstraps on a whitettail. Chunks not more than an inch thick - keep changing em' every 20 minutes or so. You'll always catch more fish with fresh baits on.

You were asking about goldeye chunking or strips.

I always chunk them, cutting them though in cross section so the look like one of those expensive chunked salmon steaks you see in stores.

The the hook goes in on top through the skin. Stick it in about half an inch below the top, working in from the cut portion and driving the barb up through the skin. Skin is so tough on a goldeye the meat can be all gone but you'll still have the skin on the hook (and I've caught kitties on nothing but skin before when I've run out of bait).

I agree with stfcatfish's recommendations.

80% of the time, I use a nummmy hunka-chunka-Goldeye/Mooneye. I am not a big fan of suckers, unless Goldeye/Mooneye are scarce, then I will be forced to use them.

The other 20% I use slivers of Goldeye/Mooneye Fillet for picky cats, or when slip floating in fast flows.

I like a big fresh-cut Tootsie Roll Hunk-a-Chunk-a-Goldeye for the big SUMO Piggy's, or a maybe a whole Goldeye head and then some.

I hook a 7 or 8 O/T Gamakatsu circle hook through the nostrils of a big juicy Goldeye/Mooneye head and flop that bugger on SUMO Mama's doorstep.

Eventually she will check it out. Little cats will peck at the guts (Just ignore them), Mama SUMO will push them aside & woof it up when she feels like it. The biggest Piggy's push their way up to the head of the troff soon enough.

Yup, No mistaking her strike, no hook-set needed for her!
