A Season to Remember!

Recommended Posts

Well, the day that all duck hunters dread has finally arrived: the last day of the duck season. 2006 was one to remember for me as I experienced a lot of success in the marsh. Definitely better than the past few years that's for sure. It appears winter is about to show it's ugly face by the end of the week which means the kickoff of the hardwater fishing season. Time to put the duck calls and decoys away and bust out the ice rods and vexilars. Of course we will keep out a few goose dekes and the layout blinds for some late season honker action. Is this time of year great or what?

It brings a tear to my eye that duck season is finally over. It has been a memorable one for me as I left my home stomping grouneds for parts unknown. New friends and new scenery and best of all getting in on some great duck hunting action in the duluth area is something that I will never forget. I might have one more shot at some honkers, but that has yet to be seen.

I know everyone has some great memories from this past season as us waterfowlers always do after another season past. Cherish those memeories gentlemen and count down the days till next year! Take Care All! grin.gif

One of the saddest days of the year forsure, but what an awesome year in was. And plus inbetween there is late season goose, ice fishing, pigeon/crow shootin, predator hunting, pheasant hunting, and SOB's spring hunting, open water fishing, dove hunting, and early season goose hunting to keep me busy.

Hopefully this year is just a precursor of the good days to come for duck hunting. Same in '07 or better I am hoping!

this was our best year since 2002. It seemed it was better, but when I review the records from 2000 this one comes in 4th behind 2000, 2002, and 2001. The last 2 years were terrible as far as numbers, but this year was much better. The weather really cooperated with very few blue bird days and very few harsh weather days. Seems like almost all of the days we spent in the feild were overcast, light winds and moderate temps. Nothing extreme on either side. If my math is correct I spent 28 days of the 60 day season in the slough which I believe is an all time high for me. It was a great year, but I am sad to see it be over. Some late goose hunting and a coupple weekends of muzzy hunting and then it's off to the lake.

A sad day indeed. 2006 was a great season, good weather, lots of birds, and I got out more this year than any other season yet. Just gonna have to fish to pass the time 'til next season arrives. Only about 10 more months now! Take care and remember you're not alone in these feelings of despair.

Definitely a season to remember!

Last night I started the process of putting the duck boats away, motors getting winterized and decoys packed for the next 10 months. It's a sad day knowing it's over, especially as I left the house this morning to have a lone diver fly overhead moving south in the 3 degree air with stiff winds.

I classify this season as perfect.

It definitely seemed that the dry conditions out west moved more birds east, and the unseasonably cold temperatures that began Oct. 12 (Our group timed a 4 day duck trip perfectly with that storm....incredible hunt) moved a lot of birds. October remained colder than normal which made the birds move more than we have been used to, yet they stuck around for some time.

I spent a lot of time on the marsh this year, and more than previous years, with several friends, and it seemed whereever we went, for the most part, there were great numbers of birds to at least watch and appreciate.

From opening day to my final day it was nothing short of spectacular in all aspects of this fall's hunt. grin.gif

Anxiously awaiting the 2007 season...

here's to a great season guys!

I don't think anyone would argue that this year wasn't far better than the previous 2 or 3 or 4 seasons.

Opener brought us limits for I think the first time ever.

Action stayed steady through mid-season with many good hunts which included diver action!

The late season birds on the river weren't as cooperative as years past but that probably has more to do with the mild temps more than anything.

Experiencing our first real good field hunts for malls in which we had literally hundreds of mallards bombing us was certainly a highlight...and lets not forget the PERFECT drake pintail AND drake blackduck that bombed into our field spread and were quickly identified and harvested.

It's gonna be tough hunting field geese and having to hold our fire as mallards bomb in, but who could ask for a greater sight?

Good luck to everyone during the late goose season as well as the subsequent pheasant stomps, ice fishing, etc. that will consume much of our winters. Snowmobiling is just around the corner as well. God I love MN!

Tamer-- "precursor"? NICE

WOW my season sure was a lot different than yours were. I think that the '06 season is my worst ever! Brought home a total of 5 ducks this year! Spent many days going many places and never saw any birds! Drove around for hours looking for them and they were just not there. I guess I will have to venture more than 50 miles from home next year! To top that all off I lost my 4 legged hunting partner of 11 years this year. That day truly sucked!

On a brighter note I did get to spend some very quality time with my son in the duck blind! The sunrises prompted many great memories of hunts with my dad as well! I do not plan to give up duck hunting in the near future but dang, would like to have a bit more meat for the table! There is nothing finer than a roasted duck dinner!

Oh well, like we always seem to say with our sports teams... there's always next year. Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

by far my best waterfowl season ever. and that includes the last four years splitting time between south dakota and western minnesota. this is my 12th season and by far the most fun ive had. and the best part was we only hunted water 3 weekends all season! ive never done so much field hunting in my life, but will be doing much more from now on. and the best part is that i introduced two buddies to the excitement that is geese walking in your decoys. now ive got addicts just like me to help fuel the truck, browse for decoys on sale, and just generally enjoy with the same intensity the waterfowling experience that i miss already! late goose season here we come!
