GPS help

I bought the H2Oc last year at this time. I also bought the Minnesota Lakemaster chip as well. I need to point out i also eventually bought the Wi. Chip as well. I originally bought the unit for the lake maps and the GPS plotting tracking, and sorts.

What i also come to find is what a wonderful tool it is when you travel. I bought a ram Mount for my dash. I use the Cig lighter for power. Now my Job had me in Fond du lac Wi. for the first 6 months of 2006. Did you know you can go to the points of interests and Find everything from the closest Post office, Bar, Grocery Store, Gas Station and even bait shops shops to mention a few. not only does it plot it, but gives you the Address and Phone Number. Heck i even used it to find a guide charter Service to fish Salmon out on lake Michigan.

Yes The Color can be hard on batteries, but I love this thing. This is something I knew i was going to have for quite a few years. I figured i would regret not getting the Color version. I am glad I choose Color.

So if you are asking for advise the Lowarance H2Oc or ifinders are the way to go. You will not regret it. The map chips are awsome.

IceWrangler- how do you like the wisconsin chip compared to the minnesota chip. I am debating on buying a straight out wisconsin chip or getting a 2006 version minnesota chip because that one has some wi maps too. Are there that many more wis maps on the chip?

Now I'm even more excited about buying the chip than I was about the unit itself. I've been saving up a few Gander Mt. gift cards for awhile just waiting for that new 2007 chip to come out. The guy from Gander I talked with is pretty much in the know and is also a fellow FMer'.... Rippin' eyes. I think the $150 is what he was told by a Rep. or something a few months back. Thanks for the info. guys. I also took it outside today an didn't seem to have any trouble with the sunlight so far either.

I have a couple of questions regarding this post. First, where in the heck did you get the unit for 211 dollars shipped. I want to get a relialble place to order. Second, I think I have to get the Navionics chip because of the border with Canada issue. How far does this chip go into Canada and does it cover Lake of the Woods. Thanks.

ooppss... To really answer your question smile.gif

The Lakemaster Chip Pro Version Stops at the Minnesota border. It does show the location of islands and such on the Canadien Side. I ran the Nav Chip and the LM chip side by side last year up there on a trip. I ran them side by side...on day one. For the next seven days I put the LM chip away and strictly used the Nav Chip

The Navionics does show data on both sides, enough to show the entire main body of water that the border runs through. It will extend a couple of miles into bays that stretch away from the border, but then end. Example - We were on Sand Point Lake and it showed depths shore to shore through Red Horse Bay, Namakan Narrows, and then east through the Namakan River, but the data ended about 1.5 miles before Lady Rapids.

Basically, if it's a border water, the Navionics chip will show contours from shore to shore. The LakeMaster chip will not show a thing on the Canada side... no contours, islands, streams, shoreline.

Yes, there is data for Lake of the Woods on the Navionics. Not only some depth contours, but also submerged rock, lights, buoys, recommended tracks, overhead power lines... But it appears to be kind of hit-and-miss, with overlapping squares of data for some main areas and leaving other areas of the lake without that much detail. Wish I could give you a better answer, but the combination of the size of the water and the slow refresh rate of the chip is driving me nuts trying to give you a good answer. Maybe give me a name of a feature on the lake and about where it is (hey, maybe a favorite waypoint wink.gif )and I'll look it up for you.

Does anyone know if they make an external power adapter to plug into a wall outlet? If so where have you seen them?

CrappieAttitude: Others say they have found cheaper solutions, but I consider mine a freebie: I use the adapter from my Rapala ProGuide Deluxe electric fillet knife set. Steps output down to 12V and works perfectly. (Great knife, too.)

This past summer, I bought the Garmin GPS V on sale at Cabelas. It's black and white and has the turn-by-turn directions feature. I got it more for traveling, but it will be fun to use it this winter for fishing.

Hey Fish and Fowl, what Navionics card do you have and what would you recommend. They have gold, classic, and platinum and each covers different areas or has better coverage. One covers Rainy and Lake of the Woods only. What can you tell me about the chips? Prices and quality? Will fish Rainy and all of LOW almost all of the time.

Navionics Premeium North chip for you......

Agreed. Stop off at most any of the big sporting goods shops with an electronics gizmos counter and they'll have a rack of catalog/brochures. Pick up the free one called "Navionics Premium HotMaps -- Premium Lake Maps for Serious Fishing." It's a 48-page glossy mag with all 8,000+ lakes on their 5 Premium chips: North, South, East, West, and Canada.
