Anyone Make their own Custom Turkey Calls?

For the past few years I've been toying with the idea of making a few of my own turkey calls. Nothing from a kit but from scratch. I'm thinking about making a couple boxcalls and a slate over glass. Just one more thing to make the hunt even more memorable.

Anyone here make their own?

Borch:

Great idea! If you make them, I'll buy one!

The only call I've ever made is a wingbone yelper from a fall hen I took especially for that purpose. This was about 5-6 years ago, and the call sounds great. I have yet to muster the confidence required to take it on a hunt, but I'm getting there.

Last spring while practicing with the garage door open, I heard a gobble about 100 yards from the house. I walked into the driveway and gave a few more yelps with it. Sure enough, the thing cut me off. At this point, I was annoyed with myself, as I was intending to hunt this area in a few days and didn't want to train the thing in just before season. I shut up and closed the garage door, only to see a nice tom cross the road and head down into our bottoms about 3 minutes later. They work.

And, the ending to the wingbone call tom is that tom...Oh forget it. I know the ending to that story. grin.gif

Geez, you think a guy (namely me) could shut up and be nice to a person (you) that is extending a favor to him.

Good post, Joel. I used the information, but ignored it like the dope I am. I am limited to certain dates.

If you go to the NWTF HSOforum they have an area that gives you instructions for wingbow and tube call, I am not sure about a slate call or not. Last year I did a project with my son's first graders where each of them were able to make a tube call. I asked Proex to save the 35 mm canisters and we made 25 of them with the kids. Needless to say getting 25 1st graders in various velping and kees was interesting. They had a blast and we used them last sping on our archery hunt. Also on the NWTF they have a box call that my son put together. It turned out really well and they have everything to complete it for 8 bucks to it was a fun project for us and he used it last spring as well

Borch, if you need slate let me know. I have an almost never ending supply of it at work and can get you all you would need to make many many calls for FREE.

I think this would be a cool idea and would like to make one myself. I found one set of plans so far for a slate call on-line. Just do a search for custom calls online. It looks like it is actually an outdoor life article. If you come up with any other slate call plans I would be very interestd if you wouldn't mind sharing.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
