St. Louis River Channels

Well, I'm getting pumped already! (Probably not in my best interest yet!)

I met up with an old friend the other day and he has a cabin on the St.Louis River. He said I'll have to come up and check out the Catfishing this summer because they get alot of them.

Anybody else know the scoop on these fish? Looking at the atlas....This river system looks pretty interesting!

The Quest never ends!

My dad grew up in Zim (north of Duluth) and always tells me about all the cats he used to catch there. I also have other relatives who are always bringin em in on that river. Personally I've never fished it, I can only go on what I've heard, which is that they are plump and plentiful.

I fish the St.Lois quite a bit for cats and you can hook into some pretty nice ones but usually 3-4 lbs Just use chubs or even smelt if you use chicken livers I noticed you usually get the smaller ones.
Ifish down stream near Oliver Wi. after dark
in about 12-15 ft of water

Thanks guys....My friend's cabin is located just N.W. of Floodwood near the confluence with the Whiteface River. I guess they do real well using frogs.

This might be a good area to have a River Rat gathering this summer. Would anybody be interested?

Dark ... The Floodwood area is great for cats. Theres a couple holes that are better than others .. but I dont know how to go about describing where they are at... The yearly town festival is *Catfish Days* and the winning fish for the contest comes out of the same hole every year.

Theres some great nothern fishing on the river in that area too .. lots of big northerns.. bring a couple red-eye's. (local favorite)

Now that you mention it...I have heard of that Floodwood Catfish thingy...I just didn't know where it was until now. Maybe a trip up for the party would be a thought.

Dark30; Another guy you could talk to is wilmik on the BOC. He fishes the St Louis River all the time. Jerry Oconner and I was going to get togather with him on the Minnesota River but he could not make it. But Jerry (northstar) got with him on that river and had great time. Hope you can make it there. Just don't eat the fish according to Jerry.

Dark30; I well e-mail wilmik and see if he knows about the fm and if not maybe could have another member. Could you e-mail me and tell me more of the Belle Plaine Catfishing League. I may have more vacation time this year and would be nice to join the league. Beening I seem to fish that area more now. My e-mail [email protected] Looking at some RV's thinking of trading my pick-up camper. nothing new just nice. Planning on up dating my boat next year. Maybe a poontoon or a bigger size jon boat. See you in the spring. Been a great winter so far but still to long.lol

Dark .. and fellow river rats...

I'm moving up to the St Louis river area .. Floodwood & Savanah rivers too.

Will be moving this coming week to Floodwood.. going to have to come up and see how your monkeys work for bait. Have a good hole a block away from the house I'm moving to... Bring the wife & Kids .. They can keep mine busy!!

Cool! I'm looking forward to fishing up there and it might be a good area to have a gathering too.

I also know a beauty of a wild brook trout creek a ways north of there.

Stay in touch!

I will definately be spending some time on the Minnesota this summer ... too many good times in the past, too many to be had not to come down.

I'll get some lines wet once the water opens and see what the cats want to do ... locals have been filling me in on some of the *other* fishing opportunities around (there are fish besides cats) and it sounds quite promising... Just need to sort out the talk.

This does sound like a good gathering place. I used to hunt grouse out around Floodwood when I was going to school in Duluth. Beautiful area! There's a ton of smallmouths and walleyes in that stretch of river as well! Sounds like a good early fall location - huh? Late August? Early September?

The way the weather is going up here that would sound about right .. any earlier and we may have to use an auger to get the lines wet.

From what some locals have been telling me the fishing wasnt that great last year due to high water. This year if the water returns to normal it could mean it would be better than normal?

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
