Ok Mwal I'll chime in on this one for you. I have speared out of my Fish Trap II several years ago when I went to college up in Bemidji. What I did was went to the fabaric store and purchased a sheet of Black material the cheapest I could find and placed it between my poles and the canvas of my fish house. This served as two purposes. 1. my background was always dark and the fish I speared or saw never spooked. 2. I end up leaving it in because it also gave like another layer of insulation and kept the house warmer. Matter of fact that was back in 1995 and to this day I still have it in my Trap. I think I have about $3 in material.

Another neat thing about spearing in portables is most people have no idea what your doing and infact you can get in and out of a lake very easily.

Good luck,

mr

Last year I speared down at school in my Otter medium cabin. I put a tarp over the top of it to block light from the seams, windows, etc. and it worked really well. Just drilled a few holes and cut the rest with the ice saw.

I plan on using my otter this year also. Think you just have to be a little more carefull that you dont fall in the hole with the portable though. I thought about buying some of that thin reflective insulation and paint it black to cover the roof between poles, or could use some black canvas material.
