Over the summer I bought my first wheel house and I am finally am getting around to stringing up the rattle reels. Can you guy tell me what line to use and your basic set up for walleye? Also I am making a trip to Upper Red Lake so any information on a set up for crappies would also be appreciated. I have never used rattle reels before so I need all the information like if you use a bobber or what size and type of hook and so on.

Thanks in advance

I use 50# briaded dacron for the main line. 50# is easier to handle and tangles less when laying it on the floor. 4' of 4# florocarbon leader tied to the main line. Tie loop knots on the connecting ends. This doubles the line for strength and makes replacing the leader much easier. A split shot and #4 hook or moon glow jig is all you need. I don't use a bobboer, but I have oid fashioned reels that click, no bells. Use the smallest bobber you can. This set up has worked great for me on mille lacs.

I have always used 30# Cortland with a 8# mono gut with good success I also generally have a slip bobber on the line and mostly go with a #2 or #4 hook either in blue, red, glow or plain brass with as small a split shot as I need about 18" up from the hook and have had the best luck tail hooking the minnow

I dont use any line on my rattle wheels at all. > i instead wrap the line of a pole (with the bail open) around the wheel two times (starting from the hole side, counterclockwise).. when a fish pulls the line, the rattle wheel goes off, i can then do a quick unwrap of the line (clockwise flip of pole around wheel)and use the pole to set and pull in the monster...

no more funbling with line.. works great, once you get the wrap, unwrap process..
