getting portable - help

If you are planning on towing by hand, sled or atv or doing a lot of hole hopping, definitely get the sled style. The suitcase styles are tough for transporting other equipment around. As far as getting blown around, both will move if you don't secure it. But you can buy or make ice anchors that attach to your house.

I have had both the Cabelas Suitcase style, and now have a Clam Voyeager. I prefer the flip over because of mobility. As far as wind, you can anchor both styles so that isn't so bad. If you like to go out and be mobile I would recomend a flip over. I enjoy my clam, but I think if you look on this site everyone has good things to say about their flip overs (Otter, Frabil, Clam, etc.) Biggest difference you need to consider is price. Hope this helps.

A portable is a portable when it comes to wind.. they both can and will get blown around. I dont think one is better or worse than the other... I do feel for my style fishing the flip overs are far better than the suitcase styles...

I just bought an Otter.. cant wait to get it on the ice!

Haven't really had trouble with flip overs and the wind. If your overally concerned on a gusty day, tie some rope onto the sled, cut a hole, sink it and it'll freeze in. Not going anywhere then. smile.gif or buy the anchors that are on the market, they also work pretty slick. I'm a clam man, definately enjoy their products. But it all comes down to personal preference from what I've found.

quackattack13 - my first fishhouse was a Clam suitcase style and if I didn't bank snow around the edges when wind gusts came up, my house would scoot across the lake. Happened the first time I was on Upper Red Lake! If it weren't for my buddies standing 100 yds from me downwind, I think I would have never recovered that house!

So that gives you some perspective on wind and a suitcase house.

The flipover houses are nice because you can put the back of the house into the wind and just put a little snow around the edges of the tarp to keep it warm inside. If you don't have that luxuary, then just keep one foot on the tarp while you sit on one side, should do you just fine.

I would recommend a flipover- mobility is better and you can use it as a sled.

a little tip is to use the slush from your auger and mix it with the snow you put on your wind skirt. It will freeze up and keep your portable anchored. If you're on bare ice, you'll need an actual anchor (screw in or other style) to stay put. The winds out here on the prairie are a pretty good test...
