garter snakes

How do you get rid of garter snakes? They seem to be more plentiful this year for some reason. We have a pretty large yard, on a farm, so they should have plenty of running room away from the house, but nooooo. They have to be where we can see them. (insert shudder here)

Don't tell me that they are harmless and all that stuff. We have 4 females living on this farm, and you don't want to see the hysterics! My hubby isn't particularly fond of them, either, but at least he can stomach taking the hoe after them. tongue.gif

I used to do pest control and i'll tell you the same thing I told people that called me about snakes.....YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN!! I hate those vile little creatures with a passion and will run at the site of one!! I can kill then with a rake/hoe/etc, but would rather run the other way shuddering!!

I live in a 100+ year old farmhouse, which my husband grew up in. He used to get paid a nickel for every mouse he caught. I've raised the stakes a little. blush.gif Needless to say, I've learned how to deal with the occational mouse.

Snakes, on the other hand, are another story. As far as I know, they mostly eat frogs and earthworms. I haven't heard about them eating mice. I guess they are pretty thick this year. I was talking to another domestic goddess this morning, and she did away with two adults in one pass with the lawnmower. Didn't like the sound of the snakes hitting the blades, though. grin.gif

I think breathing makes her gassy.

Hubby can handle it. She's actually quite butch. Plus, she's been fixed so he won't have that chick stuff to deal with.

She's a heck of a snake eater. But like I said she farts a lot, and sticks her nose where you don't want it, and sleeps in the bed, snores too. Worth it to get rid of the snakes.

I've had a few get in the house, coming in through cracks in the foundation in the fall.

Mrs. Jackpine was most unhappy!!

I had told the kids to leave the snakes alone - thinking they were beneficial and part of nature, blah blah blah. Mrs. Jackpine overruled me, and promptly posted a bounty of $1/snake (dead only!) for any captured in our yard.

I was finally able to track down the holes they were using and block them off. The cracks were so narrow that I couldn't imagine how the beasts slithered through, but the flour I placed on the concrete floor provided perfect tracking back to the entrance. Unfortunately, the tracks in flour showed me 2 snakes had come in, and I only found one in that closet.... Took Jackpine Jr. and I several hours, but we finally located the fugitive serpent beneath the couch in the family room.

I have a couple hanging out in my basement.

Mrs Jackpine and Mrs boilerguy must know each other cuz she's not diggin it at all.

They honestly don't bother me and I have a LOT less spider webs in the basement than I used to. I rarely see them and when I do I wanna high five the little fellers for getting rid of the spiders.

All's you need for the spiders is a big shoe for the habitable parts of your house, and a can of spider killer for the dark recesses of the basement, assuming you are willing to go into the dark recesses. I send hubby in for that. grin.gif

I like using Ortho ant and spider killer.

Sadly, all our cats have succombed to the evil automobile. They have all become road kill. The dangers of living on a tar road, I guess. That's why we hire the Plunkett's guy. He doesn't get run over by cars. He just shows up and replaces the bait in the bait stations.

The mice started moving in before the combines had a chance to start rolling this year. Hopefully next week I will get to start my seasonal job as a heavy equipment operator. Look out field mice! A big tractor can smash one of those little buggers pretty good! Kind of like a big shoe on a spider.

So today, my hubby's cousin, who we farm with, asks me what to do if your kid gets bitten by a mouse. They are not just moving into the houses - they are also moving into the combine cabs! His 5 year old was riding along for awhile during beaning today, and he spotted the mouse. After a short chase (this isn't a big cab, mind you), he comes up with it, holding it by the tail. He just says "hey, look dad!" when the mouse lunges and grabs a finger tip. Fortunately, it didn't really break the skin, but it freaked out the dad pretty well. tongue.gif I'm not sure if they are going to tell his mom about this one, or not. grin.gif

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
