Catch Covers???

5 gallon buckets will work, but I agree with the use of catch covers and the inserts. The main reason is for the smoothness of the plastic. To use the 5 gallon buckets, you need to cut them. That leaves a jagged edge for your line to catch on or get cut. Catch covers have a rounded smooth edge on every edge that a line could touch. It also dresses up your house very well. The prices that have been mentioned are close.

If you are located in southern minnesota, we stock the covers and inserts. We can also ship. Give us a call and we'll quote you a price. You may think I'm just trying to sell some catch covers (and I am) but everyone I've spoken to is very happy they purchased the covers rather than jerry-rigged something.

In all reality the price of catch covers are'nt that bad when you compare them to the cost of any other hatches etc. If you have the funds, they are definetly the best thing to get, but if money is tight...use buckets. I have an ice house that I use 5 gallon pails in for sleeves and it works fine. If you're concerned about "sharp" edges, just melt the edges with a torch...wallah, no more sharp edge! Or use sand paper to clean up the edge, either works great.

I agree with Catman here. If you cant find the funds for the covers & sleeves you need buckets work just fine.

I did the same thing before I had the $$$ for (8) each of the catch covers.

I just estimated the height I'd be fishing @ dropped on the ice, cut the "bottoms" off the pails to the length desired.

Tops were still in tact with factory rounded edges. I had no issues at all that year.

I actually with the catch covers drill my holes with the house up and then set it down on the shavings. Creates a great pressure fit I just use the scoop to bowl the sides wide and smooth quick and drop the slush inhaler in quick to clean the hole. Quick, easy and no sleeves needed. 75% of the time there is no banking needed as well
