Question
Lip RIPPER!
I currently have a 2003 140 Johnson 4-stroke that is in the shop for some repair. The motor was making a loud ticking sound when I got the RPM’s above 3000 and the noise got faster the faster I went. Here is what the dealer told me was wrong with my motor. Does this make sense on 4-stroke motors? Has anybody else had this problem? I am curious to what you guys think. I need your help.
From the dealer: The head is at our shop getting valve jobs done,
the problem with the leak was from very excessive carbon build up on the
valves. This is caused by a lot of idling time on your engine. We have the
computer record for you which shows this time. The parts are not too much since its only the gaskets and there are 16 seals we took to wilsons for the valves. I wish Evinrude would have helped but like they said, you must be running a fuel additive for carbon build up you. You should have been told when you bought the boat that excessive idle will carb up the engine. Evinrude and every other company is the same, these motors are not
trolling motors, the rings wear into the cylinders really bad at idle and carbon is a very big issue. They just dont recommend trolling for big outboards, that’s why there are small kickers. (these are the exact words from the dealer, not mine)
