4 stroke problems! I need your advice!

Lip RIPPER!

Question

I currently have a 2003 140 Johnson 4-stroke that is in the shop for some repair. The motor was making a loud ticking sound when I got the RPM’s above 3000 and the noise got faster the faster I went. Here is what the dealer told me was wrong with my motor. Does this make sense on 4-stroke motors? Has anybody else had this problem? I am curious to what you guys think. I need your help.

From the dealer: The head is at our shop getting valve jobs done,

the problem with the leak was from very excessive carbon build up on the

valves. This is caused by a lot of idling time on your engine. We have the

computer record for you which shows this time. The parts are not too much since its only the gaskets and there are 16 seals we took to wilsons for the valves. I wish Evinrude would have helped but like they said, you must be running a fuel additive for carbon build up you. You should have been told when you bought the boat that excessive idle will carb up the engine. Evinrude and every other company is the same, these motors are not

trolling motors, the rings wear into the cylinders really bad at idle and carbon is a very big issue. They just dont recommend trolling for big outboards, that’s why there are small kickers. (these are the exact words from the dealer, not mine)

Without getting too hot. Try calling Bombardier directly and calmly explain your situation. Getting the right answers come from going directly to the source of the problem. It seems like boat/motor dealers really like to hide from problems by giving some lame excuses for poor performance which gets them a little more $$$. You should get better, more direct, answers from the manufacturer than from the dealership.

Let us know what Bombardier says.

Good luck,

Well, the wararnty ran out on the motor in April and the dealer said they were going to talk to Evinrude and see what they would do. Evinrude had them run some tests and then they were going to evaluate the tests and if it was something faulty on there end, they were probably going to cover it even though the warranty was up. I am going to call them today and I'll let you know what I find out.
