Trolling motor whine in AM radio

LwnmwnMan2

Question

Okay, now I'm on other boards pertaining to other subjects, and I know how it is when the same question is asked over and over.....

I tried to search on here, and then I went back 50 pages of posts to find someone that's already asked, but to no avail.

Here goes...

We get a whine out of the radio when the trolling motor's running.

Also, it drops the AM signal to almost nothing.

Now the trolling motor battery is seperate from anything else, and it's at the front end of the boat, while the other 2 batteries are at the back end. One is the starting motor for the main motor, the other battery runs all the electronics.

What can I do other than this to get rid of the whine??

I'm running a MinnKota 55 PD.

Thanks.

The motor generates radio waves.. does that to mine too and it's a battery operated radio with no connection to the boat. Only thing that helps is use the FM band..

You're right, but it's hard to find the Twins on the FM side on a calm, clear evening fishing..... smirk.gif

FM would be OK, but XM would be better! Let me know if you need help hooking it up.

There is nothing you can do. It is the nature of the beast with the pulse width modulation (PWM) of the motor and AM radio waves.

It is what it is.

That's what the dealer said when we didn't have ANY AM signal at all.

Then they put a complete new radio in, because even the FM side was VERY sketchy, at best.

Our last boat, there was zero whine, AM or FM.

Maybe I'll have to pull that $20 Wal-Mart special out and switch the new radio into the old boat???
