I'm looking for a spot on the south shore of Lake Superior to take my wife for our 5th wedding anniversary. Probably looking at Sept. 23 through the 28. We'd probably just stay 2 nights and do some bumming around/ sight seeing. Any suggestions?

Some great places here in the Bayfield area.. I meet a lot of folks day in and day out here that are here for the exact same reason your coming around these parts for. There are tons of bed and breakfast places, hotels, condos, etc to stay at, and if you look around there are some reasonable places to stay. Go to the Bayfield Chamber of Commerce HSOforum and look up all the info you will need for that and other stuff, it is a great guide for planning out a vacation in this area.

If you need anymore help, let me know.

Man, there are so many that come to mind right now... First tell me this, are you looking to just stay in a hotel or do you want a cabin, bed and breakfast, suite? A lot to choose from for sure and all have quite different price ranges..

Probably a cabin or suite, something with some privacy! wink.gif

On the lower end of the price range. Does the ferry go out to Madeline Island still then? (last week of September)? Sounds like it's a fer sure we're headed that way Jim.

Yup, the ferry's run until the ice stops em... You will be good to go..

Check out the Winfield Inn or Apostle Islands Rentals for the cabins... And they also will have suggestions on other places to stay as well... You can find these places by doing a search or by linking to them on the Bayfield Chamber of Commerce site...

Jim,

I think we're going to stay at Apostle View Inn, ever hear anything about that place? I've been compiling a "to do" list and here it is so far. If you can think of any "must see or do" type of things let me know. Take the ferry out to Madeline Island, Apostle Islands Cruise, hit the maritime museum's, check out the orchards, and if it's raining hit the Isle Vista Casino.

Thanks Again,

Brian

Havent heard much about the place, but it seems to be nice from looking at it. It's a little ways outside of town, but right along the lake in a good location.

For things to do, your on a good track. I would also think about seeing a show at Big Top Chautauqua, always a fun time. Also, for eating, check out Maggies Restraunt.. You'll love the food!! If you want to spend big at a restraunt, check out the Wild Rice, it is an expensive joint, but man the food is worth it!!! And when your done eating, try having ice cream for dessert at the Candy Shoppe, located on Main Street in the downtown area.

And of course for the lady, there is tons of shops for her shopping pleasure!! smile.gif

We stayed at the Rittenhouse Inn Bed & Breakfast. Very nice and well run. They also own another B & B in Bayfield that gives you a better view of the lake but I am not sure what kind of food they serve there. It is called the Chateu something. At the Rittenhouse they also have a 5 course meal option for dinner. We plan on going back in Feb for there Chocolate Lovers weekend. It is not cheap but it is nice. There are also some nice shops in the area and one that I like was the Ice Cream Shoppe. It is small and they bake right there in the window. You walk into the place and you gain 5 pounds just from smelling. We also went to Madeline Island and rented scooters for a few hours which was fun. If you do the boat cruise of Apostle call ahead and reserve seating for the upper deck.

Jim,

Thanks again, hopefully the weather cooperates for us. Neiko, do you remember how much the scooter rental was on Madeline Island? That's what we're thinking of doing too. My wife wants us to buy a motorcycle, but in the line of work that Jim and I are into, you hear too many horror stories of people getting mangled on bikes, so scooters are more my style! grin.gif Thanks for the tip on the cruise!

Jim do you do any guiding for trout/salmon around the islands? It's a long shot, but maybe she'll wanna fish half a day! wink.gif

I believe it was $20-25 a hour. We were going to rent them for the whole day but you are limited to pavement only so the 2 hours we had them was plenty. They max out at 31 going down hill.

Jim,

That'd be awesome! I've only been on the big pond 1 and lota lota is lucky I didn't puke in his boat! shocked.gif We were coming out of the WI entry and were greeted by 5 footers coming right at us....green water I believe is what he called it. Needless to say, we didn't get much fishing in. We hit the harbor in Two Harbors and I landed 1 coho. We're planning on being in Bayfield Mon-Wed. Wednsday would probably work out best for us. I'll give you a shout before then.

Jim,

The wife doesn't think we have time for a fishing trip, but I appreciate the offer. frown.gif I'd really like to get over there on the bay this winter for some smallies through the ice. If you see a couple with a gold Pontiac Sunfire w/ MN tags and a "lost look" on their faces....that'll be us. grin.gif We'll be around Mon to Wed.

Well how did your trip go? Any pictures?

I also wanted to add that 'On the Road' (Jason Davis?) is showing somthing about Apostle Islands and Bayfield tonight (Sat) on KSTP ch 5. "Destination Bayfield" is on at 10:35pm.

I'm looking forward to seeing this after camping on the islands this past July. Looking forward to getting back up there next year.

We had a great time, although we didn't get out on the Islands Cruise, my wife has some issues with motion sickness and we didn't want to test it! grin.gif I was bummed that the hatchery south of town was closed when we went there. I did see some fish in the fish trap though, but couldn't get close enough to see what they were. There were guys walking west past the hatchery ponds, fishing brookies up there? We're planning on bringing the kid's next summer and do the Lighthouse Cruise for sure. The color on Hwy 13 was awesome and my wife was very happy with her anniversary present from Oulu Glass Gallery in Brule.
