Powerstroke
Thanks Rick for making a little place on the web for the Canoers and the Kayakers. I personally own a Coleman Ram-x 15' canoe and will be buying a Souris River Quetico 17 Kevlar this winter or next spring. I've had my canoe for 10yrs, since before I could drive. I plan on keeping it though after we get out tripping canoe because the Coleman is perfect for river trips. It may be a beast, but it floats so nice and I don't worry about scratching it up.Hopefully we can all share some great ideas about places to use our boats and ways we've made our boats more user-friendly. Tom Linderholm
New Forum, nice! Use to be a pretty avid kayaker when I first moved to the north. Great fun and no boundaries.Wish I had more time to get back into kayaking. From the Brule River to Surfing on Lake Superior you couldn't go wrong.Powerstroke,You'll love your Souris, my Father in Law has one. Last time we were in the Bdub we traded for a portage with my old town royalex. What a treat on a 160 rod portage. Thing floated like a feather. Powerstroke
Friends of ours bought one this year (cause they have more money lol) and used it on our BWCA trip. The wife and I have been renting them for a couple years and are finally ready to buy one. The new boats are amazing and incredibly durable for being so lightweight. Ours will be a burgundy tiger stripe kevlar.

MNice
Powerstroke, if you want to save some $$, check with some outfitters in the BWCA area. I bought a used Q 16 in duralite for under $500 a few years ago. I re-epoxied the bottom from instructions on a HSOforum and have been more than satisfied. Powerstroke
We plan on buying from from the folks at Red Rock Store. The outfitters there are the only Souris dealer in MN. They have quite a selection and amazing service. I've been there several times and the owners would never steer you wrong.
Cyberfish
Cheffrey, what kind of Kayak did you use for surfing? I would like to try that sometime!
Tom Linderholm
Cyber,I had a 9 1/2 foot Wavesport Frankenstein whitewater yak. Worked quite well and was shaped like a big spoon. I saw lots of people out in one man canoes even when the water was warm.
Cyberfish
Cool! So you can surf in anything, even a canoe? How big do the waves have to be?I didn't think the water ever got warm there!
Tom Linderholm
The waves generally need to be around 4'or larger, 6-8's are pretty fun and anything larger than that gets a little hairy. Park point is the best place for this as there is relatively no structure just beach. Water temps up there right now are 70+. Always wear a life vest and I generallly wore a helmet(just in case). Also beware of riptides and when you get in a wave make sure you lean back other wise you will be spearing right into the sand.
