scum frog retrieve?

headed up to the boundary waters this weekend. bought two scum frogs (one green, one white) yesterday. is a slow retrieve best with some pauses on the way back to the boat or what? also, are they similar to other presentations when it comes to color? like the darker green on darker days in murkier water and white on bright days in clearer water.

retrieve them extremely sloooowww, especially when going over thick pads. I usually pull it a few inches and then shake it. I do this all the way back to the boat. when you hit an opening let it sit and twitch it ever so slightly. I like to put several glass beads in the bodies to get a little rattle and add more weight for the cast.

I have really worked on frog fishing a lot this year and TurnUpTheFishing is right on, for the majority of the time. Some times the fish will only hit on a fast retrieve, other times the fish will only hit when you just cast it out and leave it sit there for 30 seconds plus. You really have to let the fish tell you what they want. Experiment with different retrieves. What I do when I am on new water and want to cover a lot of area is I retrieve it rather quickly and try to pop up water. If I get a boil and a miss I will slow it down and try to coax the fish to strike. That seems to work the best for me.

My favorite colors for frogs are darker. I fish the Spro Bronzeye 65 natural red or the black all of the time. I just haven't had nearly as many fish interested in the lighter colors, no matter the water clarity or the weather.

scum frogs are by far my favorite top water. i have some that are just a regular frog and some popper scum frogs. white is my favorite color. for the regular scum frogs i like to leave a little slack in my line and give it a lite pull it kinda gives it a side to side action and also as the others have said most of the time work them slow. sometimes you can just real it in at a steady pace and then just pause it. they dont have the best hooking percentage that is the only downfall about them. so on the package when it says to wait two seconds try to wait but it is hard when you see that big explosion grin.gif

I have in my box a green, white, yellow, brownish, and black. I would say that my black scum frog is my confidence lure. When fishing pads I will, without blinking an eye tie on the black. Let the fish tell you what they want is right. Hit pockets, pause, twitch, and for sure count (after you see the attack, one, one thousand, two one thousand.... then, SET THE HOOK HARD. I have caught some very respectfull bass on the black frog. I think it is the dark siloette & shadow that they respond to more than the color. Think of it... When you fish thick pads and the fish see the frog for a split second as you pull it from opening to the next opening... How much can color make a difference? I beleive it is simply the slow paused retrieve and the water disturbance they respond to.

ok! question?? are the frogs you are talking about the hollow body one with the strands out both sides for legs? if so; do you repair them after a couple of encounters with the toothy critters, or do you just retire them?

i try to repair them sometimes it seems imposible and i retire them specialy when them pike eat it. And yes they are the hollow bodies and some have two sets of legs one one each side and some are made with just a bunch of strands out the middle. them are the more cheaper ones and i have caught more fish on them so i guess that is a good thing. grin.gif

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
