What are these red balls?

Was out fishing on a local lake with the kids when we saw two large red balls. They looked like floating beach balls. We pulled into the bay area to take a closer look. They were red and had a small yellow DNR stamp on the side with a black cord tieing them down. They were spaced about 100 yards apart. What are these used for?? I have never seen these before.

Possibly markers for DNR nets? They're out testing for lake surveys all over right now...

They are for Surveys I believe.

They are markers for survey nets. If anyone comes across DNR bouys like these on a lake please leave them alone. A person could easily collapse a net and kill all the fish in it.

thanks, for the replies. That's what I was thinking too. I'll have to check the DNR HSOforum to see if that lake is updated.

Sounds like a marker for a net or a trap for the lake survey. If you want to find out the results before they post them on the DNR HSOforum (which usually takes several months) you can usually talk to someone at the DNR both at the state fair. I did that a couple years ago to find out the latest fish survey results for the lake that we are on.

just an FYI, it may take some time for the new lake survey data to be processed aand then uploded to the DNR HSOforum. Winter is the time most of the surveys are processed, so don't hold your breath...
