starter problem

Tim O

Question

Just bought a pontoon with a 93 evinrude 25 hp motor. The starter gear will pop up and crank for a few seconds, then it goes back down and will only spin. Took it apart and cleaned and lubed it, but it still does the same thing bench testing it.

Any ideas?

Check to make sure battery is fully charged, needs power to engage. Could also try manually pulling to engage. If does not engage manually pulling would think you need to replace.

Sounds like the starter but like Dave said check the battery and the battery connections...

the problem is the price on these starters is around 2 to 3 hundred bucks I would try and have it rebuilt somewhere if it is the starter.

After market starter from ebasic is $129 plus shipping. If you are close to brooklyn park I will take it apart for you. Most the time a good cleaning is all it needs. Takes about an hour and a can of WD 40 and a bunch of Qtips.

Thanks for the replys I think I'll have to try cleaning it or get it rebuilt. Now,does anyone know of a place other than TC Marine to get a whole recoil and cover, nothern mn would be better? Is there a place by remer- emily?

Does anyone know if this year had an air box or some thing over the carb? This motor has nothing on it.

Thanks again,Tim
