Wild Thing
An fyi on gas prices, with no real point here... ...Expect to pay $1 or more per gallon above US rates when you cross the border. Gas in Fort Frances is going for about 1.08.9 per liter, or about $3.75 per gallon U.S. funds when you do all the math. That's a full $1 more per gallon than here in northern Minnesota. Expect to pay up to $5 U.S. per gallon at the dock at some remote lodges. Nothing we can do about it. But you can bring a full tank when you cross and fill up that truck. Probably won't affect most guy's annual trip. But folks who make a lot of trips north, like myself, are noticing it big time. It's purely anecdotal, but Customs folks on both sides say they have seen fewer boats going into Canada. Gas prcies and the higher-valued canada dollar may be to blame. Will be interesting to see what lodge owners say after the summer. Go. Pay. Grouse about it. Catch fish.
Hemlock
Good points, Wild Thing...Your math is bang on. I own a gas station in Kenora, and our price today is 1.099/liter. Multiply that by 3.75 and then multiply by .92 and that gets you the price of gas per gallon, in US currency.I am finding traffic to be good. I am seeing more guys stuffed in a pick up. I'm not sure if that's because these monster pickups can handle four guys comfortably, or if two of them decided to leave theirs at home. It's a definite concern, the price of gas, but everyone around here is still fishing, b**ching, and having fun all the while.
iffwalleyes
What do you do though if you want fun you have to pay. I know that is the reason thought that I got a crew cab a couple years ago. 4-5 guys and ride comfortable for many miles no more sore legs from the extended cab. BobT
Here's one I haven't quite figured out. I can buy fathead chubs in my home area in MN for about $2.50 for a scoop (usually about 2 dozen if you count). When we go into Canada, we are required to buy bait there. This year I did the math and discovered that the same minnows in Canada cost about $4.00/dozen (counted 12).Are these some kind of special strain of fathead? BobT
Well, I've given it some thought and all I can say is that I do catch a lot more walleyes in Canada using Canadian minnows than I do in Minnesota using Minnesotan minnnows Bob
Wild Thing
Tip: Switch to Gulp or Powerbait or some other fake. They work just as well and the final cost is much less. Try a comparison when the fish are biting, one guy with gulp one with live bait, and you won't notice any difference. Or, switch to crawlers which are $1 per dozen and you can legally bring them across in shredded newspaper. We once paid $1 per minnow on a fly-in!!!!
