What do you think of the 7:1 reels?

I'm curious if folks have been using the super-fast 7:1 reels & what they think of them??? I don't have one but would be interested if they're more useful than the 6.2:1. I'm also wondering what tactics they're most useful for in your opinion.

Thanks,

I have been using a 7.1:1 Bass Pro Extreme and it works great for fishing frogs. The difference between it and my 6.3:1's is unbelievable. It is a real burner. It is great for frogs because it gets them in before they have a change to get down in the pads and slop. It is a little too fast for me for other applications, but I really haven't given it much of a chance yet.

You should really look at the retrieval ratio in terms of inches per handle turn, not the gear ratio. It can be misleading. For example, the new Quantum burner 7.0:1 retrieves 28" per handle turn, the same as the 6.3:1 Daiwa Fuego. The new Curado 200DHSV has 30" per handle turn and it's ratio is 7.0:1. Both the Curado and the Burner weigh close to 10oz, almost 2.5 ounces more compared to the Fuego.

Would love to tell you about the Quantum Burner but I can't because I am STILL waiting for it to be shipped from Zebco....sheesh....it was ordered in April.

Backorder, schmackorder.........at this point I would have probably paid retail and had it already.

hawg tied said it well. you can have a 7:1 with a small arbor and have it hold a lot of line and only bring in 20some inches and you can have a 6.3:1 with a larger arbor and it can reel in 30+ a crank. Darn those guys that sell things that seem like one thing and are really another. It is like anything though do your homework and always test drive one first. ike

I've fished the Burner for 2 years, the first year was with a proto type. The IPT on the 7.1:1 is 28.8, weight is 10.1oz. I've had great success with this reel on my pig/jig rod and T-rig rod. The take-up on the T-rig rod has been a big plus, both on the initial pick-up by a fish and after a hook-set when they decide to head towards you. I've tried it on a buzzer rod, and it handles buzzers easily, but I have not got on a strong enough buzzer bite to give it a good work out. Last fall I used it on a cranking rod with braid to rip lipless cranks across flats, that worked unbelievably well, now if I could just figure out some way to keep piggies on the traps when they jump smirk.gif I did not like it on a C-rig rod, I fish fast and this justs seemed to allow me to fish even faster, which doesn't equate to better with a C-rig. Same with top water, I just seemed to move the bait faster than you should with top water.
