Water Dripping From Furnace

eyepatrol

Question

We've noticed these past couple of days that there is water dripping from our furnace when we have the air conditioner running. It's dripping from inside the unit, behind the door panels, over what I believe might be the metal motor cover (???). It's dripping enough to create puddles of water on our basement floor.

Anyone have an idea what might be causing this?

Could be the drain hose is pinched or simply plugged, but also possible that the A-coil drip pan is rusted through and leaking. We don't use the basement much so ours went several days unnoticed and wrecked the carpet down there. Its usually not too hard to get a visual access to check out and verify. I ended up having to replace the coil because the pan was to crumby to fix.

I have a buddy in the business so I was able to get out of it fairly reasonable. It will also depend on what size AC unit you have. Seems to me it was under 200 bucks with the recharge back then, (5 years ago) but probably more by now.

Take the drain line off and clean out the drain first. Sometimes it'll get clogged, backup, overfill the pan and drip inside rather than flow out the drain line.

I'll third the plugged drain issue. Mine plugs where the drain tube connector attaches to the pan under the A coil. It clogs with the gunk that's left behind when the water in the pan evaporates, salts, dust, etc. I usually blow through the drain tube and that unclogs it. I'm thinking of drilling a little hole in the connector so I can stick a wire in there to unclog it. It usually happens once a summer.

Working with a plumber right now. Just found out the A-coil drip pan has holes rusted out in it and the water is dripping through. Gonna seal that up and it should take care of it. Will give it a test run with a glass of water just to be certain.

Thanks for the great info! First thing we checked was the drain hose line.
