Question on the go-to lure in the shallow rocks...

Recommended Posts

went to minaki canada last year..on lake big sand/little sand.. we were going up chasing walleyes, the bite was not on so we decided to start chasing some northerns.. after the first hook-up of a 38" muskie..we changed immediately to chase the big gals.. we landed 9 all over 36" in 4 days of fishing.. and are going back up next week.. most all the the muskies caught and spotted were right up against shore(rocks) just sitting there 6ft. or less... well i purchased alot of gear (rods, lures, etc.)which costs a arm and a leg for the big gals but, well be well worth it and now hooked. We are going up for a week.. my goal is to get a ski over 48"..what would be the go to lure up against the rocks..

Hiya -

You know, when they're up on shallow rocks and chasing, it really is hard not to use a good 'ol bucktail. Nothing hooks fish better, and they work... Have to start reeling as soon as the bait hits the water, but other than that as long as you keep them up over the rocks, you're in business. Look for lighter bucktails without a lot of weight to keep them from running too deep. I like Musky Mania Sneaky Petes, Shumway Flashers, Lily Tails or Wisconsin Model Harassers.

Spinnerbaits are also great. Can bounce them off the rocks if you're careful about it. Finally, some jerkbaits work great over shallow rocks. Look for hard plastic ones like Musky Mania Burts or Squirrley Burts. Can bang them off the rocks all day and not hurt 'em.

Have fun - sounds like a blast to me...

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

One other type of lure I'd consider is a topwater lure. Totally snag free (almost) and by far the most fun to catch fish on (IMHO). Walk the dog type (Doc, Z-180, Jackpot, Maas Maurader) or prop style bait (LOWRider, Pacemaker, Topraider, etc.) The prop style baits tend to have a higher hook up rate.

Good luck and get some pics and a report up here when you get back.

First off.....I'm jealous!

I was playing around with the Rapala Super Shad Raps a couple nights ago. I was impressed with the action I could get out of it. While casting I'd say it was running 4 or 6 feet deep or so depending on the retrieve speed, just about right for your conditions. A little twitch and pause over the rocks could be the ticket!

Yeah, the lip will get a little banged up, but they only run somewhere around $9, so it's not a wallet breaker.

Enjoy the trip!

Metal lipped cranks, bends doesn't break. wink.gif

Also as RK go over the rocks with a bucktail. Rock fish like to sit in litle pockets waiting for an easy meal. With a bucktail you can cover many of those pockets fast.
