Gloves - Recommended Hand Protection

Recommended Posts

The local lake I have been fishing lately I have caught a few Northerns and some very nice TigerMuskie while fishing for bass and walleye. I typically bring them up to the boat, use the long handle pliers and shake the bait out to stay clear. If you wanted to get a good picture with a fish, what glove do you buy to protect your hand, and how do you pick them up etc.

I like my hands, I want to keep them!

You can get a Lindy brand fish handling glove at any Gander and many bait/tackle shops for around $15 bucks. You just need one for the hand that holds the fish while unhooking and then for the hold if you take a picture.

As for holding them, there's a crevasse just in front of the underside of the gill that's a perfect fit for your fingers and while you're gently squeezing there your thumb will be a couple inches further towards the bottom of the jaw tucked in the pocked there where it comes to a point.

I hope that helps and makes sense!

Oh, and for unhooking it's pretty easy to just grab the little indents just above the gill on either side...one with the thumb and one with the index finger.

Luke, you should have come out with me this morning, lots of "shadow" fish, dang deep dwellers scared the heck out of me.

As far as the glove I always thought once you went through it was all over because the glove is now tangled, not so. I messed around with them when they first came out and you have to really work to get a hook through the armor part. Pretty amazing stuff.

Of course I'm a tough guy and didn't need the glove for the little pike that put the hook in my hand. Should of heard me whine in the ER when the had to back the hook out of my finger bone, wasn't so tough then confused.gif

Jon,

Some of us have to work!!

Were you out on the "neighborhood" lake? Haven't hit it yet, maybe tomorrow AM weather pending. I was thinking as I drove in it would be a good morning to be out, heck they all are!
