line got tangled in prop, help

rundrave

Question

Had the boat out for day of fishing. Boat started up and ran fine just like it should. Got to my spot, turned off the motor, pulled it up out of the water and started trolling for the afternoon.

Put motor back down, started it up, started heading back to launch and boat would not take off, I would give it trottle and it barely moved more than a couple mph.

Drove back to the launch, after I got boat on the trailer I find line tangled up several times around the prop.

I havent had the boat out since. I got all the line untangled and off from the prop.

My question is, could there possibly have been some damage done to the motor? Is there anything I should check for first before I start it back up again?

The motor is a 70's 40hp Johnson 2-stroke with electric start. It was just freshly rebuilt last year and has worked fine. This is my first boat so bear with me this is all new to me?

thanks in advance!

Have had line caught in motor many times without any problem. I do know if I get a lot of weeds stuck on motor it runs slow so in theory same thing could happen with line. Would try to hook up water to motor in yard and run before you go out the next time.

If the line wrapped around the shaft behind the prop it can tear up the rear seal. Look for leakage from lower unit and check for water in lube next couple of times out. Replace the seal if there is water or milky colored lube in the L.U.
