Boat cover question.

Ski from FF

Question

I live in Fergus Fall and am looking at geting a custom cover made localy for a Alumacraft Lunker. My question is how to tie the cover down. Has anyone here used the tie down clips that attach to the spray rail and work with a contiuos bunjee cord that goes all the way around the boat cover? This looks like it would be quick to put the cover on the boat on or off the trailer.

Thanks

SKi

Had a Lund Fisherman that came with a factory "travel" cover like you described (bungy through entire perimeter to trailer hooks). That thing caught the wind so bad & messed up finish I had a custom snap - on made. I used the factory cover for winter storage to keep the dust off. It worked for that. The snap on was great & never flapped or hurt the finish. No matter what type cover - I've never seen one that wasn't a pain in the butt to put on. Especially when it's 90 deg. & you're sweating your nards off.

Dad has a boat with the spray rail clip system and it is quick and easy. No complaints.

I had Shoremaster make me a custom cover for my boat. I had the nylon straps with quick clips that fasten around the trailer frame. I am pleased.

If you are getting a custom cover made, I certainly would recommend a canvass cover with snaps. The cover should have a mechanism for holding it taught across the boat, shedding rain and water, and relieving stress points. My cover has two "ten poles" that center in a grommet. A friend of mine has the flexible fiberglass arches, both are good. He also has snaps on his Ranger, mine is a Smokercraft, but his custom cover is a vinyl/cloth material. By the way, the shop that did his won a design award for it. However, I much prefer canvass in cold weather. I do not like an attached motor cover, it's a pain. If you get a motor cover, have that a separate piece. Depending on the design of the boat there may or may not be a "rope" that is sewn all the way around the perimiter of the cover to be pulled taught after securing the snaps. My buddy has this, I do not. But with either there is no need to bungee the cover down as the design holds the material close to the boat and the wind cannot catch underneath. Hope this helps.
