Muskie
Ok, so I'm a little new at this, ill admit. I used to go fishing all the time when I was kid, but now i am getting really interested again. I'm 18 now. I've been fishing every weekend for about 3 or 3 weeks, for about 6 hours straight with a boat and everything. me and my partner arent really cathing anything. I've caught 1 fish, wich was like a 6in. catfish. is there anyway to get better, and tips, what? I love fishing, and I love being on the water, but we just can't catch anything, and it's getting a little frustrating. any help is appreciated. cliffy
First of all, Welcome to Fishingminnesota! You took the right first step in learning more about fishing by joining this HSOforum. What are you fishing for? It might be helpful to pick a particular fish and check out its forum on this site. Ask a ton of questions...name the body of water you are looking to fish...etc. That would be a good start. Good luckCliffy.
DTro
your going to have to give a few more details. What kind of a lake/river are you fishing? There are a lot of great fishing minds here. Give out as much info as you can and there is sure to be help not far behind.

Slyster
Hehe! I know they look a bit sissy... but they rock! Tonight I took my father out for some bass and guess which color produced the most? We tried green, black, and other dark colors.. even white.. but PINK won! And by the way.. they aren't PINK.. they are called BUBBLEGUM colored. hehe.. kind of like my carry all pouch I carry is NOT a purse... it's a MAN BAG!... (or as Seinfeld would say.. "it's European")
Giant_Jackpot
Well, unfortunately I cannot officially approve of a color called “bubblegum” either. I think I gave you a hard time about the color once before and you corrected me then as well. But whatever works!Muskie, sorry to derail your post there for a minute but we do like to have a little fun once in a while. I would assume by your FM name (by the way how come that name has never been taken?) you are going for the occasional muskie as well. My suggestion here would be to join Muskies Inc. I started chasing muskies about 8 years ago and did horribly until I joined MI about 4 years ago. The info I have learned from the guys at the North Metro Chapter has been unbelievable. You’ve got to put your time in to get the info, but if you spend the time on the water with them it will be worth it. As mentioned above, I joined the North Metro Chapter, and we meet at the KC hall in Fridley. The Twin Cities Chapter meets in Bloomington. The North Metro is done meeting for the summer but we still have our league nights throughout the summer where we hit a different metro lake each week. If you join up, you can get in touch with other members and ride along with them on a league night to get some pointers. We get bonus points for taking out new people so many guys are willing to do this. Anyway, check it out if you have time. www (Contact US Regarding This Word) com. redhooks
Hey Muskie- If your after the skis, join Muskies Inc. as Giant Jackpot has stated to learn firsthand info from avid anglers. Also go to your public library or video stores and check out any fishing videos they may have, In-Fisherman has a great selection for just about every species. Another resource that has helped me out immensly is the book "Lunkers Love Crawlers" written by the editors of Midwestoutdoors,it gives great pointers on; boat control, fishing structure and the fundamentals of live bait fishing. Experience is always the best teacher so if possible go fishing with someone more experienced and ask lots of questions, most quality fishermen are willing to share knowledge and promote the sport. Good luck and we hope to hear more from you, especially some success stories!!redhooks

Muskie
ok, well, I live in Spring Lake Park, I go fishing for Walleye, Northern Pike, and Bass. Mostly walleye and northerns though. I'd LOVE to try and catch some muskie's, but I doubt that will probably happen though. anyway,I usually use shiners or night crawlers. I've tried using jigs, walking the dog, and I like top water fishing, but i'm getting no luck with it at all. We're gunna go up to clear lake probably next weekend, & try our luck there. deepportage01
this is just my thoughts so dont rip my head off everboby!I would pick the fish you like most and go with that. as a walleye guy I think you can spend alot of time on the water with fast bights not very comon there are some times though when you get on the fish and its the best but like I said that not the norm as fare as walleye go but pike on the other hand patern very ez for me I just find one and fish places ware I got the first one spiners work well for me along weed beds and pads but over a 'hump' I will use minnow baits and slow roll a in line spiner.as fare as walleye go I will start out with live bait and rigs and work fishy spots and if there is no bight I move on until i find fish or its time to head in remember with the walleye troll slooooow like 1/4 mph to start out and go from there let the fish tell you what they want not the other way a round. if you are ever in the chisago area shoot me an email and I will send you to a few places to start out.the best thing about fishing is the time spent with freinds and famly and in the outdoors the fish are just a bonus for enjoying your self so welcome to FM and dont let one or 40 bad days on the water get you down. when you get on a hot bight that is the stuff dreams are made of.later and good luck DP
senkoskipper
hey muskie you should go to the metro lakes forum and check out the open seats/fishing partners thread. Since you and your buddy are just starting out, it might be a good idea for both of you to go out with someone that knows how to fish and show you a few things. You can only learn so much from "reading" about fishing, you need to see for yourself how its done and what techniques to use and where to use them and where not to use. ocf
First of all what kind of reel are you using (hopefully spinning or baitcasting) what baits, what weather, and what structure those things would decide what you will catch and what you wont catch.
