Joe Mauer... lone offensive bright spot

A little from Peter Gammons.

Remember how the Twins were ridiculed in 2001 for taking Joe Mauer with the first pick instead of Mark Prior? Five years later, try to see if the Twins will make that trade, as despite a knee injury and the eventual possibility of a move to third base, Mauer is a rising star, while Prior has suffered from the modern pitcher's real world of inexplicable injuries. And since making his Cubs debut on May 22, 2002, Prior is 60th in the majors in wins with 41.

Your funny Geno, I'm not that good! It was more of trying to find a positive out of this miserable season. Does Minnesota even have a good sports team anymore (besides Gopher mens hockey)??

I am sure there are a few decent little league teams out there. Does that count?

I am not sure you can count the Gophers Hockey team either after they lost to Holy Cross.

Its a bleak existence for minnesota sports fans right now thats for sure.

That will kill me forever! It's Gopher hockey, Vikes football and everything else is so far down the line it doesn't matter.

I know you didn't intend it that way Buzz, but with me being so light-skinned after listening to Windy all last year, I take everything so personally - like last night's one-hit gem by Windy's favorite pitcher Zambraino. If we had to rely on Wood/Prior, we might end up in 5th place. Nyuk, nyuk.

Ever since I started this post Mauer has been a stone cold killer at the plate! Yup, I'm taking credit, get me his agent, I want a piece of the next contract. grin.gif Okay, really... he's on freegin' fire!

The thing is, with the swing and mechanics and eye at the plate that Joe has, he will never really be prone to real long slumps. Another nice thing is that if pitchers try to pitch around him, he will sit back and take a walk. His OBP is going to be great for years.

That swing of his is one of the purest and prettiest in the game and right now he is an unbelievably tough out.
