Trying to catch bigger fish

Griggs

Recommended Posts

I caught 5 bass last night on Tonka. All small! OK maybe one was close to 15". Also caught a smallie and had another small smallie that spit the hooks next to the boat. Crank bait and T-rigged worm. I missed a few too. Yup time to change tactics and fish that deep weed edge.

Griggs, did you get you some Power Pro? I think I might be getting out again next Tuesday morning, let me know if you want to go--maybe we could hit lake X since the big one's seemed to elude us.

(my two fishing mentors)

I was planning on getting some Power Pro Monday, I was about to pick some up today but I couldn't decide whether I need the 300 yards or if the 150 would work with backing.

I even found some brush hogs, but dietz I still haven't found any of those hooks or Comidas. I'm going to head to Gander in Lakeville and probably the Fleet Farm across the street as well.

Tuesday sounds good, I wanted to go Tuesday morning reguardless, but I think I'd like to check out lake X. Give me a call or an email.

nice fish Griggs & Dietz! how deep are you guys fishing those jigs on average? what weight jigs? pork trailer or plastic? pitching to docks or weed edges? I hope to get out there next weekend or maybe this week so any tips would be greatly appreciated from anyone. TIA!

crab- welcome to HotSpotOutdoors and FishingMinnesota. Great to have you on the boards with us. Please enjoy the forums!

To answer your question. A jig can be used anywhere. At any given time I probably have 100 bass jigs in my boat. I know, overkill, but I love fishing jigs!. I throw a jig in a foot of water and in 30 feet of water. Its just going to depend on the conditions and where I feel the fish are. I'll throw them to weed edges, in weeds and in open water. I'll flip them at docks, pads, wood, anything!!! I keep a good assortment of jigs from 1/4oz up to 3/4 oz in my boat. And will usually use the lightest one I can get away with depending on the depth and wind.

I stopped using pork about 15 years ago.. all plastic trailers for me.

Deitz,

I just couldn't stand the thought of Chad's biggest fish coming from a north metro lake cool.gif

So without further ado....

Here's Chad with his first Largemouth Bass over 4 lbs.

4lbs, 12 oz.

Here's my little dink for the day. This one was around 3.5 lbs. Chad not only took his biggest ever, he took the big for the morning.

Hey Tom, I believe I might have run into you and Griggs last Wed on a west met lake on the north shore very close to some reeds around 9 am or so. Is your Boat Yellow? Myself and another teacher were out enjoying the summer flippin for some largies and had very little luck that morning. We hooked into a great number of smaller fish. Largest of the morning was a 16 incher I fooled with a 10 inch T rigg from under a dock west of where I think I saw you two... Just wondering if that was you...

How did you guys end up that morning? I think we had similar stratigies in mind. Ours only worked on the smaller fish though? NICE boat by the way. Do you fish that lake often? I spend a lot of time there.

We did pretty well. It was very slow compared to the two weeks previous. I think we caught 20 for the 5 hours we were out there, but more than half of them were over three lbs, and I caught four that were over four lbs. Chad posted the photo of the biggest one a couple of lines above this. I fish that lake somewhere around 45 days per summer, so I am definitely not a stranger to it. Stop by and say hey the next time your out there. I much prefer to fish it on mornings where the wind isn't blowing and the lake turns to glass--that's when it's the best. Gauranteed if the wind isn't blowing and I'm not working--I'm out there.
