Lower unit needed, or used parts to repair mine.

Benny

Question

I hit a rock or dead head up in Canada last week, now I need a prop shaft or a complete lower unit for a 1995 Merc 40 hp 4 cyl motor.
I think the 50 hp will fit as well.

Any one know of a good motor salvage out fit besides Twin city outboard?

I heard there was one up by Longville area.

Man we sure are stuck with a bunch of worth less dealers around here.

Not one could tell me if the Yamaha would work on the merc or not.

They all said no at first , then admitted to not knowing and they only have the manufacture info to go on.

I asked Twin City outboards and all I got was "you would have to bring it in so we could see if they matched"

Well I found a couple of places that have used shafts so I should back on the lake in a week or two.

Just in time to get it ready for storage.

Did the same thing a few years ago. I live in SE MN and had a guy rebuild the lower unit. They reconditioned the shaft on a lathe and put on new gaskets & seals. The ss prop had a chip about the size of a hangnail so that stayed on. Total cost was $280.00. A lot better than the $1200-$1400 for a new lower unit. Not sure of the availablity of a good machining shop in your nighborhood but definitely an avenue worth exploring. Just my $.02.

Creek Kid, I am a machinest by trade so I could make a whole shaft if I needed to.But the time to put into one is not woth it.

My shaft was broke in half, with the prop and broken part at the bottom of Lac Suel res.
I found a guy right in down the road from me who has Merc parts, so I will get a used shaft from him and any gears I may need.

I will replace the seals and o ring and replace the shaft my self to save money. It is an easy job as everthing is easy to get at.

Surface Tension, you are right on the money, this has been the best motor I have ever owned. The old 9.9 Johnson sport twinn is right there as well, but for gas milage, oil consumption, and reliability this Merc has held up very nice.

Benny, you are the luckiest person alive. I have a 1997 Mercury 4 cyl that the powerhead went out on 2 years ago. If the lower unit is the same, which it should be, give me a e-mail and we'll see if it works! I also have a stainless steel prop that is perfect and a spare aluminum prop that has never been used. Let me know.
