Looking for some input on a short reed honker call. I'm going to be buying a better one this summer, and with all the calls made I'm just wondering if anyone has any good things to say from experiences they've had. I'm a long ways from a Cabela's where I can try a bunch out, so I'm trying to narrow it down a little bit for when I get out of town. I'm looking at anything between $50-100. Any info appreciated.

I have heard alot of good stuff about Featherduster calls ($90) they are located in East Grand Forks. You can't go wrong with Foiles, Grounds, and Zinks but look like they are out of your price range. Some people have said the Foiles Meatgrinder ($55-$60), Tim Grounds super mag Poly call ($50), just look around and hear some feedbacks on what they use. I use a Tim Grounds super mag and love it.

I bought a foiles meatgrinder last year. 60.00 at sportsmans warehouse in st. cloud. I really like this call. I have not tried any others but have heard good things about the grounds and I am sure there are other good ones out there. One other thing. If you get a short reed be sure to check out Sean Stahls Honker Talk video. He teaches you everything about a short reed call. Hope this helps.

One thing to consider, buying from a 'name'; Grounds, Foiles, etc. you can get some terrific customer service. Grounds may personally answer the phone. Also, these guys support waterfowl and hunting.

If you drop to a poly or even a good wood version you should stay under $100. Any acrylics will put you over the top.

A difference? If you're going to practice 10 months out of the season for 2 months of hunting, spend the extra $$$. If you put 'em away, dust 'em off and gun- save your dough.

Good luck.

Signed,

Wishin' I was in the market for a good short reed

Grounds just had a special going on a wood supermag. Check em out!! Another thing, you should personally go out and find the call that fits you. Different strokes for different folks as they say. I myself have a Foiles SMH and a GK LG-1. That LG-1 is one sweet little call. IMO! They are all good calls in the right hands. wink.gif

I blew a Sean Mann "Eastern Shoreman" flute call for my first 5 or 6 years of hunting...just got a Tim Grounds SuperMag Poly this offseason and am gettin' pretty decent with it...can't wait to test 'er out this September! Also got a couple dozen flocked bigfoots this year too...its gonna be a great fall!

I have to ditto Tim Grounds he is a great guy, sent an email inquiring on a call and he called me personally. Spoke to him a couple of more times and always willing to sit and talk and show ya how to call. Wonderful service and great personality.

Gansers Freestyle Goose calls are a good choice for excellent quality goose call for around a $100. He is out of St. Cloud. I have been blowing one for about 5 years. I own about 5 of them and they are great.

I have tried almost all of the short reeds on the market. I started with a Heartland X-out and that was a decent call, but just didn't fit me. I then got a Foiles SMH and thought that was great until I tried a Grounds Super Mag and that has been the best call I have had in my hands. I would recommend going somewhere that has a large assortment of call and blow all of them and see which one fits the best. All of the calls that I have tried are very similar, but it is just a matter of finding the one that fits you the best. Good luck.

Went with the Tim Grounds Super Poly Mag. Great little call, love the range of tones from very deep to very high pitch. Been blowing it non-stop and will continue to do so 'til sept. 2. After that it's the real deal. grin.gif Thanks again for the input fellas!

Good Choice wink.gif!! I have been blowing a TG Pro Super Mag arcylic for 3 years and absolutely love it. Once a guy learns how to fluctuate the tones and make the right sounds at the right time the amount of geese you kill will skyrocket!! You won't be disappointed and remeber to practice, practice, practice!!!!!
