Over-revving 1996 50 Evinrude

Just got back from a slow pontoon cruise around the lake. Decided to run faster on the way home. Motor was at around 4000 rpm when suddenly, the rpms went to 5500 - 6000. My hand was not on the throttle. I shut it down to a slow troll. Tried to accelerate again - same result.

Any suggestions on what may be the problem?

First thought is your prop is slipping on the hub. If you have a replacement change the prop. If not have it looked at at a prop shop.

4000rpm is way too low for your motor, max rpm are around 5000/5500, you should have prop checked and maybe ask for correct prop for your boat, seems to me the one you have now has too high pitch.

I was at 3/4 throttle at 4000 rpm. Normal full speed is 5500 rpm.

I would guess that your prop is slipping.

If not, maybe your carb. is messed up and your motor is running to lean..?? Bad news for your motor if that is the problem!

I'd also guess that the hub has slipped, or depending on how old your motor is, the shear pin has been sheared...
