Mille Lacs rookie needs to be pointed in the right direction

Fellers,

I've never been on Mille Lacs. I'd like to meet a buddy there and chase some sklunges this summer. I'd greatly appreciate any tips in the right direction that I can get. General areas would be good (obviously I'm not expecting gps coordinate type info here), types of structure, any general info would be helpful. I know I'll need both red and pink lures ( grin.gif), but don't know anything else. Any tips to get me pointed in the right direction would be great.

Thanks!

Might wanna hire a guide for a day or a half day. You would learn more in a day from a good guide than you could in a year reading/questioning here!!!

Just had too mention this to ya, LOL! grin.gif

Mille Lacs is the simplest lake in the world to fish muskie. Go somewhere between Garrison and Malmo find the outside weed line and cast the heck out of it. I am serious and not being a wise guy, it’s that simple to start with.

Fisky does have a solid point, a guide will teach you more in one day then you can learn in a year. I still hire guides when fishing new waters. I figure a couple hundo to a guide will make up for wasted gas money driving around aimlessly for a month trying to figure it out. smile.gif

Jon and Fisky,

Fisky, I realize hiring a guide would be a good idea. However, I'm the type of dummy who seems to enjoy beating my head against a brick wall and figuring it out for myself.

Jon, I realize that type of answer could be percieved as being a smart aleck, but I know what you're talking about- sometimes it's easy to make things a lot tougher than they need to be.

The next question shows my complete lack of knowledge about the lake: what type of weedline are you referring to and what depths do you typically find it in? I assume it's a cabbage line in 6-12 feet, but I'm totally guessing because I don't know anything about the lake.

Thanks again for helping out a clueless soul...

Nothing is sacred anymore......Jon just about gave it away!! grin.gif

North side does give you miles and miles of territory. There are some really nice cabbage beds by the Wealthwood access that I like a lot, don't plan on using the access though, too shallow. Some around Myr Mar too that seem to hold fish. I launch out of Red Door and can go left or right....lot's of sand. I've had sight fishing days where I've seen 20+ fish up on the sand.

South end is like a whole different lake. Lots of rocks, reefs, etc. I always fish it and make sure I have all points marked so when the bouys are out in the fall I can still find fish holding (and lower end eating) structure. There's Cove, Isle, & Wahkon Bays, just to name a few. You'll find some good weed beds in these bays as well.

Going to experiment with planer boards this year, I like the concept, especially fall nite fishing. I want to try covering some ground, the number of monster "accidental fish" caught out in the middle of nowhere by walleye guys has my curiousity piqued.

All that said, I like the hire a guide approach too!

Back to work now........

Chris

Yes, you' can't miss it. I have "hopped the wall" and went inside edge too, I mean like 4 to 5 FOW. Popped a 46 fatty doing that. One of the days we saw many many fish up on that inside edge and open sand.

Looking forward to trying those 9 inch Exude Crystal Shads I just ordered on the MR Twister FM page in that very situation.

Speaking of Jonesi....

I was just on their muskiemojo site, very cool!! Got to see all the colors of the Weagles, which are in stock at Thorne Bros, making a run there today or tomorrow. Ordered a T shirt and a sweatshirt too, one says "Got Mojo?" and the other one is "Weagle Baby!".....got a couple for the Mrs too. She is determined to catch a 'ski this year and look good doing it! Pretty cool stuff!!

There's fish all over that pond, you just gotta find 'em and make 'em eat.

Personally, the North End is quite boring for me. It's like fishing in an aquarium...plenty of fish to look at, but most are not eaters.

I am quite partial to Vineland Bay. Loaded with fish, but on most weekends you will find about 50 boats in there chucking Dawgs. That is when I take off and "explore" a little.

cjac, thanks for the props on the site man. And thanks for ordering some Mojo gear. Wear it wit pride, man. Updates and additions to the site are coming in the near future, including a Pro Staff which includes someone you may all know... smirk.gif

For the FM crew, check out their site, and under products check out the Weagle colors, I love the Stink Pickle and Nuclear Bee!! Under merchandise is where the Ts and sweats are.

Yes Andy, we will be looking good, she's determined to get on your photo board wearing the Pink "Weagle Baby!" shirt while posing with a muskie!

As long as it's not cjac in a tighty pink T shirt I think it will be ok. grin.giftongue.gif

Since we are on the pink topic: I love the pink/white XXX buck tail. Awesome color for the pond. Between the pink and movement of the hair/boo that the XXX Buck tail has they will definitely bite on that!
