bass lakes

My first question would be... Whats wrong with Mille Lacs lake?.. I love fishing bass on Mille Lacs... Smallies and Largies!

However , if you must leave the big pond.. Sullivan/Platte is just west of the south end of mille Lacs and are decent bass lakes. Knife Lake is not far as well, and is a great bass lake..

If you are willing to head west from the big pond a couple miles there is a small lake (Camp) that has some very good bass fishing....landing on east central shore.

That's my fallback if the big lake is too rough.

My inlaws have a cabin on camp lake, so that means I've fished it a number of times.. I really gave it my best a few long day last summer, but never caught a thing. Any tips for camp lake? It sure LOOKS good with all the reeds and then super deep drop offs and distinct weed lines.

Sly -

I find most of my fish in the pads on the eastern branch with very slow presentations. Most of the time they are deep in the pads as well - not on the edges as you might expect. I have had a few times where a white spinnerbait has produced some nice fish coming off the weeds but you are just as likely to get pounded by a slimer doing that stuff. Mostly it is the pads - plastic worms (junebug), jig/plastic, etc. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

If you don't mind spending a small fee to a small mom & pop resort, Smith lake is pretty good to get out of the wind. West side, just north of Camp. Otherwise, if weather is good, fish Mill Lacs. No better place for a shot at a 6 or 7lb smallie.
