Rod opinions

Recommended Posts

Guys, looking for your thoughts. I decided to check out the longer rod craze and picked a St.Croix Premier 7'6" Heavey w/ Fast action, though I haven't used it yet, I did get a reel on it and like the feel so far. The one thing that I was unsure of when I was purchasing the rod was whether or not I wanted the Heavy or the Medium Heavey, keep in mind this will be a Weagle (and the like) and glider (some larger)rod. I decided on the Heavy because I currently have an older St.Croix legend muskie rod 7'0" medium heavy and love it for Bucktails problem is it's a little whippy for the larger bucktails and didn't want to experience the same thing with the new rod but I don't really want a telephone pole either. I do have a custom 6'9" heavy Avid and love that one too.

Thoughts anyone?

I own that exact pole in medium/heavy. Out of my 3 muskie rods it is my favorite all around rod. I can get by with just about any bait under 3-4 oz. It's the bigger spinner baits and such where I have to switch to a heavier rod.

I guess the most abuse it gets (besides fish) is fast trolling bucktails. I'll run up to 5-6 MPH and the medium/heavy does the job well...even during violent strikes. I'm going on my 4th year with it now.

RU that rod will work nice for the heavy stuff like Weagles, Bulldawgs and monster sized cranks and still have enough flex for some of the smaller stuff.

Welcome to Fishing Minnesota MuskieMojo!

For those of you don't know MuskieMojo is one of the two owners of Muskie Mojo tackle that produce the Weagle, Wabull and the Triple X bucktails. Not to mention MuskieMojo (Luke) is a very avid Musky angler that knows his stuff. It will be great having his input in the forums.

Welcome MuskieMojo!

All these highly respected muskie anglers on this site make me feel like I should be paying a subscription for all this great advice! I promise not to laugh about taking a header off the 'tonka dock!

Good info on this post, thanks! You guys just sealed the deal for me on what rod to get, can't have enough! I think I'll pair it up with the Luna, been eyeing that reel up for a while and heard nothing but good things.

Welcome Luke!

From the sounds of it the MH maybe the better to go, rather then the H, looks like I'll be making a trip to Gander.

Thanks Guys.

yeah, if you already have a 6'10 H, I'd definitely go with the MH on the 7'6".

Bucktails (small to big), Weagles, Mag Dawgs, big gliders ...I've thrown just about everything everything on mine with no problems.

One thing I will suggest if you want to throw some bigger stuff with it is get the handle extended (Croix handles are a little on the short side, at least for me). This will make for much more comfortable fishing with large baits. I prefer all of my rods like this. A rod builder like Thornes can do it pretty cheap, or you can do it yourself with a little patience and the right material.

MuskieMojo,

I totally agree- I like the longer back cork on my rods too. My dad is a custom rod builder and he customizes all of my rods for me, so it's not a concern for me. Just out of curiosity, how long do you usually get your back corks in?

Well with all the sound advise, I took back the H and got the MH, I'm sure this was a wise choice as I'll get better use of it, and the majority of the lures I run aren't overly huge.

Thanks guys
