Front Nav. light height

picksbigwagon

Question

I just installed a trolling motor on the bow of my boat, but my front nav. lights are mounted behind it now. I bought a higher light (old one was 8" high, new one is 10") and it looks to be high enough. I found nothing in the reg's about height, just being able to see it for 225 degrees. it is really close on the left side of the boat, do I search for a 12" or higher light? Anyone here been pulled over for not having correct light vision?

i would say put your lights on at night in the driveway and walk away a fair distance and see how well you can see the lights, look from multiple angles and if you can see the lights good i would think you would be just fine with the 10 inch light.

The only light that has a height regulation is the rear white light. It must be 24" above the highest point in the boat so that it can be seen a full 360 degrees. The front light as was stated, only needs to be high enough so that the 225 degree viewing is obtainable. No height requirement there...

If there were a requirment half of the smaller boats that have the light permanently mounted to the bow cap would probably not pass....

So, as others have said, if you have 225 deg of viewing you're in good shape.
