Evinrud 9.9 1980

erikwells

Question

I have an Evinrud 9.9 and it's about a 1980 or so. I have had it for three years and done nothing in terms of repairs. Last year I had to pul and pull and pull to get it to start. Once it would start I would get about 1/2 horsepower wide open. I was going to bring to my local outdoor equipment repair guy and have him do a card kit on it. Do you think this will solve my problem or do you think I should be doing something else? I can't bring by 3 year old out fishing and not have the motor work as it should. Please help.

Thanks

EW

Might be a plugged carb, might be a bad coil. When taking it in, its better to take it in and let them diagnose your problem.. not just take it in and tell them to put a carb kit in it.

erikwells, I think your running on one lung so I'd start by replacing the spark plugs. If that doesn't take care of the power loss bring it in and have it serviced. Having been that its been sitting around for 3 years with most likely gas in it isn't helping much either.

Pikemaster101, did have the lack of power still after the work was performed or did it eventually happen. Also what work was done. With out knowing the history and not being able to have the motor running in front of me its hard to give any diagnosis. Right now theres just not enough info to go on, any symptoms you can add helps.

The lack of power could be something as simple as a fouled plug, carb adjustment or both. Since the plug wires were changed I'd have to think whomever changed them thought there was an issue with spark.

I'd figure out if your loosing a cylinder first and which one. An inspection of the plugs will tell you.

I’m sure when they checked out your motor the did a compression check, or at least I would hope so. I had a very old 3hp at one time and it ran perfect going out to our favorite spot but coming back I couldn’t get any power and it would die out unless I pulled it partially out of the water until the rpms came up and then I would drop it back down for a few seconds then have to lift again, we did this for a couple of miles.

I took the motor in the basement to try and find the problem and couldn’t find a thing until I took the head off and found the gasket had blown out between two cylinders, thus no sign of oil or anything on the outside of the motor. One piston goes up and pushes everything to the other side. Just a thought and something more to consider.
