Help!!! trailer wiring problem!!!

Jeff S

Question

While trailering my trailer last night I lost my lights. I pulled in the driveway and smoke was pouring out of the tounge. I took it apart this afternoon and the white wire which attaches to the frame of the trailer was totally fried.

Any thoughts on the cause of this?

Thanks for the help.

Was the ground wire on your tow vehicle burned or melted , If you have a ohm meter , take the plug in on the trailor(unplug from vehicle) put the + lead of ohm meter on the brown wire and - lead to trailor frame if the meter gives you a reading the brown wire is shorted to ground, thats your running lights, next take the yellow or green wire and do the same if either one has a reading that wire is shorted to ground, Those wires are your brake and turnsignals, If that all checks out you have a problem with your tow vehicle wire harness, Hope this helps.( I work on alot of boat and sled trailors in a years time)

Problem solved! smile.gif

After rewiring the damaged wires and melting them again I figured it was my truck. After I found that the truck was not the problem I looked at the plug that goes into the truck and which the trailer plugs into. I took that apart and discovered the ground wire was disconected and resting on another terminal. Problem found!

Good thing it happened now and now on the friday before opener.

Now I can get back to fishing!

Thanks for the help.
