Spark Plugs

I have a 2001 Merc Optimax, 200 hp and I'm wondering how often I need to change the plugs. The motor still runs and starts great and the plugs cost over a $100. I do all the other maintenance but I keep skipping the plugs. Any first hand knowledge or professional advice would help. Thanks HTB

I would say as long as your motor is still running great you're in good shape...

You might want to check with other dealers or sources, plugs for an Opti were around $ 15.00 each, but should be a little better now.

For your motor should be around $ 70.00 $ 80.00

I would sure like to hear a RATIONAL explanation of why a spark plug has to cost $15! I mean other than the fact that the manufacturer thinks he can get away with that sort of pricing? C'mon you guys......$15 for ONE spark plug. Do you get a kiss with that? HA?

There is not rational explanation, many mfg have specific plugs for their engines and you will pay trough the roof for them. I agree it's a rip-off, but there's no way out....

I did decide to change the plugs this year instead of finding out mid-week on Rainy. Guess what, $21.95 ea. x 6 plus tax = $130. Glad I don't need to do it every year. After I'm done I'll stick those old plugs in a bank vault cause they must be GOLD or maybe its just FOOLS GOLD, butt either way thay didn't use any grease. HTB

My boat has twin 225 Optis, I run 200-300 hours a season. Merc recommends plugs every 100 hours, I get far more than that, I'll pull them and check them every 100 hours and if ok I replace them at the start of the season.

when you pull them out what do you look for? HTB

Look at the amount of carbon build up and the gap between the trodes. Too much carbon will inhibit spark formation as will the gap being out of spec.

There was a lot carbon buildup and one plug had a cracked insulator, so I guess it was time to change plugs. HTB
