Food plot marketing BS

So now I think its BioLogic coming out with a soybean/corn seed mix. I thought anything(especially corn) designed for cattle was dump for deer. What gives? Or did they finally admit deer have been dying in cornfields and addicted to bean fields forever and they now need something new to market? Of course I'm sure these beans and corn are 'specifically engineered for whitetail deer.' Sorry, but I had to blow some steam.

Write to Biologic and see what they have to say, we'd all like to hear it. You are right, the marketing hype on some of these seed blends high, consequently the price is out of sight. Its kind of a supply and demand thing, the companies realize that lots of hunters are trying to plant food plots.

Right now I have a two acre plot that is planted in three kinds of clover, one from Imperial clover, one from another company, and one of straight red clover that I bought at a local seed house, I want to see which one grows best and see if the deer show any preference.

You can't beat the 1/2 off price that Biglakebass is offering for the MN deer hunters seed, check it out on another post.

Your best bet for buying most seed is to do it at the farm store or grain elevator in the area you plan to plant. They know the soil conditions and will recommend the best product. It will be far less expensive than the seed blends marketed for food plots and many times its the same seed! Good luck!

My 2 cents and experience.

I disagree that you will find cheaper seed at local places than what we have available through the MDHA though.

We have clover at $35 for 25 lbs. There is no place anywhere that I have ever seen that has clover seed that cheap. I want to clarify that this price is what we sell it for after paying for half the cost of the seed with Hides for Habitat money raised. We have other blends as well.

I do agree going to a local farm store is a great idea.

I have burned countless hours of time at one local Ag place. laugh.gif

I agree, what the MDHA is doing is completely different. Sorry, I should have clarified that before! I am specifically speaking about the food plot mixes available on the market. No need for names, we all know them! If you can buy seed through the MDHA, I would suggest you give it a try! Pretty good deal!

The MDHA seed is a pretty good deal. I checked my price list from a local business and most clover and vetch types are running from $1.20 to $5.75 per pound. It just depends what you are looking for. I always get a kick out of walking through GM or such and looking at the prices on their seed. Most of the products I find are priced at least 5 to 10 times higher than the same seed from a local Ag dealer. But I guess they need to pay for the fancy photos on the bag grin.gif

Foodploting is such an uneducated process where we live.Every two or three weeks the animals or fowl want to eat something else.this year were doing on one set aside 4 acres oats for geese ,5 acres corn left standind for all species, sveral live apple trees for deer and even more apples hauked in,overmix in the oats of alflfa for pheasants and deer,3 acres grin sorghum,3 acres short sunflower. We have oaks quarter mile away where bow stands do well early and spruce grove tightly tied on farmsite ,no down fall or other mature trees on rest of 160 acres, next to 400 acres public land.A very healthy gorwth is maintained on 129 acres of grasses wildflowers and forbes. This year we are going to request aid from local clubs and government agencies to assist in costs .It works and we do help to feed the neighborhood to.We have never tried these name brand plans here but have tried them on several small plots and theyu do sreve a purpose there. My idea is that it all is good and more people should take part in plots.Very satisfying to see what comes in.Animals love bugs and they seem to come with the rest of things free

Just a quick note, about 99% of the corn grown is a hybrid meaning that the corn a farmer harvest in the fall is for the most part sterile. Some of it may grow but not much. So if you want to plant corn you need to buy SEED CORN. Soybeans are not the same as what a farmer harvests in the fall will germinate and grow just fine. A soy / corn mix in a food plot I think is a good thing but should be used as part of the total plot. Corn is the #1 thing feed to cattle in this country to finish steers why because it is high energy and helps the marbeling (fat) of the meat. Deer and cattle are similar in the fact they are both ruminant animals not monogastric like humans, hogs etc. Being a ruminant a deer is a forage based animal but when the going gets tuff in the winter months corn gives them energy that they desperatly need to get through a tuff winter.
