Fishing Selkirk in Oct.

Recommended Posts

Was up at the Rainy River over the weekend catching walleye and talked to a group of guys that fish up at Selkirk. They said they fished up there every Oct. and do well for walleye on the river. I was wondering if they were talking about the Red River or the Winnipeg river. They said they fished below a dam. Does anyone have a little more info on fishing that area that time of the year. What baits or tactics that time of the year produce. Also are there any good hotels or bait shops that are close by. Thanks

If they said Selkirk it had to be the Red River. Now the Winnipeg River also runs into Lake Winnipeg but that is out of Pine Falls so my bet is they meant the Red. Yes October is good for walleye and so is November, December and January then March. The latter the better. It is good right up to freeze up and then as soon as U can get on the ice, usually mid Dec til end of Jan it is real good.

Places to stay, well try Stu's at Cats on the Red. He has modified his house to go along with the rooms and I know alot of guys are really enjoying it this winter. Then there is always Selkirk it has one motel but make sure U take everything in at night. There is also a camp grounds at Selkirk. Check out "Catsonthered.net and U will get more info on lodgings.

Some guys do good trolling cranks and others jigging. My favorite is jigging but then I don't like washing lures. This past fall and winter have been some of the best eye fishing. You will hear we call them "greenbacks" and that is because of the brillant green they are when they come out of the water. They say it is because of the shiners they are eating out of Lake Winnipeg and the limestone.

My personal best this fall/winter was a 30" a 10 to 12 lber. There have been lots bigger but in my eyes any walleye is a trophy.

Thanks Canuck, I'd be extrememly happy with a 30" walleye. I suppose the full moon in Oct. would be a good bet. Or do ya think that might be a bit to early. Does the moon phase help on the river? Also is there a good bait shop nearby you could recomend?

The October walleye fishery up here (better known as the "fall-run") is incredible!!! For those who can take some sound advice, chances of hanging a trophy or two are excellent. The first two weeks of October are always the most productive on the Red and then the Winnipeg River usually gets into gear! Both can be incredibly productive, although on average the Red usually consistantly produces more double figure fish of the two.

The hardwater season on the Red begins as soon as the ice is deemed safe. This can be as early as the 3rd week of November and the action is incredibly for weeks on end!!

As Canuck has already pointed out, March is another highly productive time for walleye and Lake Winnipeg is the venue of choice!!! This past weekend, I had some guys up from the St. Cloud region, in just two days, they iced more than 200 walleye averaging over 3 pounds! They had nine trophies to boot, with the largest measuring a fraction under 30 inches!

The season draws to another conclusion this Friday. Over all, I would have to say that it was one of the best fall and winter season's I've seen in the past few years. I can't wait until next fall and winter, ah but first I have to contend with a massive pile of "Big, Bad-(Contact US Regarding This Word)" channel cats!!! That outta keep me out of trouble until then! wink.gif

Stu,

Do you rent out your cabins during the hardwater winter months?

I've stayed with you in the fall a number of times in years past, but I've never made the trip up to the Red in the winter. If you have some info you'd like to email me, please send it to [email protected].

Much appreciated,

Couple things- Stu, do you really think that any of us believe that any size or type of fish can keep you outta trouble? grin.gifwink.gifgrin.gif

Regarding a winter stay- I stayed at Stu's new winter digs this last ice season and it was really nice. Sounds like he plans on doing even more work on it so it'll be even better for next ice season. It was really a great place to stay and a far, far better option than any of the hotels, etc. in the area. He's always had a great place to stay in the summer, but now his winter place is second to none. Also, he took great care of us while we were there (as usual).

Thanks for your kind plug Scoot!

The renovations worked extremely well for us, as well as all our guests during the rescent hardwater season. In fact the response was so positive, I plans are in the works to winterize the entire operation in time for the next hardwater season. The winter walleye fishery here on the Red River, Lake Winnipeg as well as the incredible perch fishery over on Lake Manitoba are growing fast in popularity. People need a place to stay and they also need some solid "information" as to where to look for the fish. Accurate info is something that can be hard to acquire staying at local hotel/motel. I'm always willing to share pertinent fishing info with my guests......come to think of it, "why wouldn't I"!

A very special thanks to all who stayed with us during this past season.........look forward to seeing you all again!
