Double
Hello,My dad has a '95 70HP Johnson tiller. Motor runs great, but at anything 1/2 throttle and above it becomes VERY hard to steer. 0 marine_man
You could try adjusting the trim tab located above the propeller on the lower unit - turn the tab the opposite direction that the motor is pulling when your running the motor. The other thing that makes a huge difference is to trim the motor up once you're on plane... that really lightens up the steering torque.marine_man
0 Valv
There should be a bolt or a lever to adjust the tightness of steering on most tiller outboards. Usually it's right underneath tiller swivel or on steering tube (either side), check this picture as example:
0 Guest
usually a grease fitting somewhere too.. little fresh grease never hurt.If you do losen up the steering, dont go too loose or it will start to get a mind of its own when you let go of the handle.. its nice when you can let the handle go at slow speeds and the motor doesnt turn on its own. Just kidding....I assume it's a tiller, then follow the linkage underneath handle and all the way into motor, there are several spots where you can get some oil or WD40 to losen it up. I don't think that early model had adjustable throttle friction.
0 83walleye
Steering torque with higher-horse tillers can make things just about unmanageable. Unless you have tilt & trim, you're out of luck except to hang on tight while going fast. If you do have t&t though, buy one of the floor-mounted T&T switches from Gander Mtn or wherever($25-30) and they'll make your life alot easier. Just trim it up as you get going to reduce the torque - works great on my 75hp Merc tiller.
