Fire Line

Jimmy from Cottage Grove

Question

Kind of a stupid question. Does anyone have an opinion about using fireline ice fishing? I use it on everything. I love it! I have a buddy that insists that mono is way better for fishing because the fish can see the fireline in the water, and I would catch way more fish if I took it off. Any input?

J- I like fireline also and probabaly use it more then I should.

If the visibility criticism is the best your buddy can do, try this remedy. Add about 1-2 feet of Fluorocarbon line as a leader. The visibility issue will be taken care without lossing the benefits of fireline, no stretch and sensitivity. Then sit side by side and see who gets what for fish. wink.gif DanN

I also use Fireline most of the time and agree that adding a 2' florocarbon leader helps in really clear water.

In the spring and fall I usually tie my jigs straight to the Fireline with no problems getting the walleyes to hit!

The only problems I have had with Fireline is that it tends to freeze to the reel spool if you are fishing outside in below zero weather. I switch to Berkley Transistion Line under those conditions! I have had great luck with Berkley's 6# Transistion line this winter! laugh.gif

I tried fireline for the 1st time this winter. I basicly fish for panfish. I use 1 or 2lb vanishing and caught way more then on the fireline. Same jigs and holes right next to each other. There is a huge differance when you set the hook. I was impressed by the instant set vs the strech feel you get with mono.

I think Fishing Tech was referring to Berkley Vanish... Berkley's fluorcarbon line... Either in regular Vanish or the newer Vanish Transition... I used some of the Transistion this year also.... Worked great through the ice!!!

I have been using fireline for the last few years on hard H2O you can't go wrong as far as sensitivity,I use a good barrel swivel between the fire line and the vanash. One thing I did learn is that I had to go to a more forgiving rod tip because of the no strech fire line, fighting a head shaking 20"+ eye you need a good rod with flex so not to rip it's lips off.
