Deep Cycle battery question

dwag70

Question

So can you use a regular battery tester(car battery load tester) on a deep cycle battery. I left my in the boat all winter. I brought it into the garage and tickle charged it for the last couple of days The little eye is back to green

How do I tell if it is still good and will work ?

A regular car battery tester measures cold cranking amps, which is the amount of current the battery can supply in a short period of time. Deep cycle batteries are designed to supply a much lower current for a much longer time. I've had deep cycle batteries that where bad but would test fine with both the VAT (volt amp tester) and the new fandangled handheld electronic testers. So in my opinion no they can not.

I will agree with you as I had one checked 2 years ago and the service station said it was good.I went fishing and the battery went dead in 1 hour.I went back to the same place and had it checked again and they still said it was good. After the next time out and it lasted for a hour again,I went and bought a new one.I should have sold it to the guy at the station since he thought it was so good.
