Conditions of Whitefish Bay

Recommended Posts

Dirtking, things here firmed up fairly nicely. We haven't had any significant snow for a while either and up until a week ago, things were finally cold. So....the slush has been fine, and I don't think this past week's weather of 20's and 30's has done anything.

I'm talking about around Kenora, and I haven't been to Whitefish Bay at all this winter, but I can't imagine it being a whole lot different than around here.

You should be into the trout next weekend, if that's when you are going. I love tracking them down in March and April.

Thanks Hemmy - glad to here the slush is minimal - the slush can take a lot out of a guy. You haven't been to whitefish all winter? You must be too busy hammering the wallys by Kenora!!!!

Been busy working mostly, but I do have an 8 X 12 set up about a 12 minute drive from my home. It's been producing nicely. Last weekend was the first sign of slowing...should pick back up though.

I plan on Whitefish for a day or two towards the end of March or very early April.

Four of us rode sleds from Baudette to Sioux Narrows last tuesday. Of course we had to ride thru Whitefish bay. In 220 miles that we did that day we never found any slush and the lake running was great, one guy riding with us had a 2 inch paddle track and my father in law has a 1.5 inch and there was plenty of snow. I hope to join my dad on saturday and head up for lakers too. He lives in Morson so we will ride sleds from there. Not sure where we are going to fish but if you see a silver touring sled ( Arctic Cat ) and a orange Crossfire together and maybe a couple other sleds dont be afraid to stop by. I will be on the Crossfire. Might be some rain/snow mix in the forecast for Saturday. Dad was up there last weekend and he did good on lakers. Maybe we'll see ya out there and good luck fishing! Brian

Hey mulcher! My dad lives east of Pelican landing about 3/4 mile or so. If you were to stand on the bridge, he lives back in the bay straight east and its the only house back there. By the way Dirtking, Pelican landing is right in Morson. Its about a 25-30 mile ride on the sleds up for lakers from there to Whitefish bay depending on where you go. Not sure on their rates but I know they just built a couple cabins last year and they look pretty nice. Plus you dont have to go far to get some walleyes, a few miles is all and its right off the main road up there. Hope to see ya out there! Brian

Hey DK, like Brian said, Pelican Landing is right in Morson and only about 38 miles (or so) from the border at Baudette. I just started going there this year and I rented a cabin for the whole winter because we come up quite a bit. Ken who owns the place has been very helpful with fishing info and we all share as much as we can to keep everyone on the best bite possible. Ken has 2 new cabins and I think his rates are very reasonable, but you'll have to call or email him to get specifics. The locals are also friendly (right Brian?) and there is a store right across the bay that has licenses, bait and a gas pump that they open up for us after hours for filling our machines. Every seems to go out of their way to make you feel welcome.

Yeah I think the locals are okay. Maybe things got better since I moved to Baudette. LOL. Did you get one of the new cabins? They look pretty sharp. I grew up in Morson and living in Baudette makes it easy for a day trip. Even by sled from Baudette is about the same miles to Morson. Maybe we'll see you up there! I havent fished walleyes much this winter up there. I 've been out more for lakers more times this winter than I've ever been. Good luck fishing! Brian

I never made it up to whitefish bay but I did make it up to Morson for an evening bite of walleyes. Ended up some nice eaters and threw some smaller ones back so we had some action. Hey Mulcher i was going to stop by at Pelican but when we got going to for home it was pretty late and I was tired plus the road was a little slick up there. I hope to get up there again next weekend and try for walleyes again and who knows maybe for lakers too. Hope you guys did good hope nobody got too wet with the rain we had up there. I think with all the warm weather we had the snow settled big time and looks like you can get just about anywhere with 4WD. I seen some pickup tracks heading out towards Manitou Island. I wont be home til thursday morning so have a good week and look forward to hear how you guys made out. Brian
