Just got back for the weekend and would like to say that WE GOT INTO THE JUMBO's on Waubay shocked.gif Like I was worried wink.gif

Stopped into Sportsman's Cover in Webster, SD and those guys have their shop/service down to a "T". They got us in and out of there in a snap. Excellent source of information as they pointed us in a couple of directions and off we went.

We got on the ice around 9:00am Saturday and the first several holes we drilled we were on fish. My one buddy drilled one hole and had 7 JALOPIES and his 10 perch limit by 11:00am! I had a hunch we'd get into them, but not right away like that.

We fished a small area around the north side of the lake and made several hops in that area. Each area produced fish. The key was to just wait out the perch as they were coming in and out beneth us. Very finicky biters though when they came in. Having a spring bobber with a small Your Bobber's Down lure or Genz Worm or Bug was the ticket. Any little movement made and it was set the hook!

Fishing slowed a bit in the afternoon, but picked up in the evening. The mood of the fish picked up too and they became a little more aggressive. We switched over to Vingla's and Demon jigging spoons with either maggies or a minnow head and had great success.

By the time 5:00pm came, four of us came off the ice and we were headed home with 36 perch. These perch were true JALOPIES....11-12" average cool.gif

We also put back as many or more through the day!!

Do that all day and your wrist is ap to get sore grin.gif

I guess for catching fish all day, the wind and the cool weather didn't seem to bother us. All and all it was a great day on the ice and another successful trip to Waubay Lake!

I'll see what I can do for pictures...It sure was a good time out there smile.gif

Just a few walleyes were caught, but mainly perch that we were after.

Plenty of ice on the lake. There were guys driving out of Kanago's and Busters and driving all over the lake. I remember last year a bad heave towards the middle of the lake but I didn't see one this year.

Good luck out there!

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
